Shaedra Byrd believed her weight loss was due to her active lifestyle and being a busy 38-year-old mom to two children. Little did she know that the significant drop in her weight was actually a sign of a more serious underlying issue. After receiving compliments from friends about her transformation following the birth of her son, Shaedra attributed it to staying active with her kids. However, when she started experiencing stomach pain, she decided to consult a doctor. To her shock, she found out that she had unintentionally lost 100 pounds and was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
The momentous journey of Shaedra Byrd through chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and more chemotherapy is a story of resilience and hope. Her colorectal surgeon, Dr. Aakash Gajjar, performed the surgery to remove her tumor at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. Today, Shaedra, now 41, shows no evidence of the disease. Dr. Gajjar, optimistic about her prognosis, mentioned that if the cancer were to recur, it would typically happen within the first 3 years. Shaedra remains positive, sharing her experiences to inspire others facing similar challenges.

Reflecting back on the events leading to her diagnosis, Shaedra recalls the hectic days of 2022 when her life revolved around her children’s activities. Initially dismissing the compliments about her weight loss from friends as a result of a more active routine, she began experiencing alarming symptoms. Stomach pains, changes in diet, and unexplained weight loss prompted her to seek medical attention, leading to the life-altering diagnosis of colon cancer.
The journey post-diagnosis was filled with uncertainties and challenges. Visits to doctors, ultrasounds, and a colonoscopy in July revealed the harsh reality of her condition. The tumor, the size of a golf ball, marked the beginning of her battle with cancer. With the tremendous support of her oncologist, Dr. Gajjar, Shaedra started chemotherapy, facing its side effects and the toll it took on her body. Despite the adversities, she remained determined to fight for her family – her son Royal, now 4, and her daughter Zariyah, 14 – who stood by her side throughout the ordeal.
The unwavering support of her husband, Roysi, and her family became Shaedra’s anchor during the most challenging times. Their dedication and care uplifted Shaedra, providing her with the strength to endure the grueling treatment process. Even as she faced moments of physical and emotional exhaustion, their presence and love guided her towards recovery. Shaedra’s message to others facing health concerns resonates with the importance of listening to one’s body and advocating for timely medical intervention.
Shaedra’s story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, illuminating the path for those navigating similar journeys. Her determination to share her experiences and raise awareness about colorectal cancer underscores the significance of early detection and proactive healthcare measures. Through the support of her loved ones and the unwavering resolve to overcome adversity, Shaedra has emerged as a survivor, inspiring others to cherish each moment and prioritise their well-being. The lesson she imparts is a gentle reminder to treasure life’s blessings and embrace each day with gratitude and courage.
