Actress Jenna Ortega recently revealed the true reasons behind her decision to exit the popular Scream franchise, shedding light on the circumstances that led to her departure. Known for her roles in the horror series, Ortega’s departure came as a surprise to many fans, especially after leading two of its sequels.

Reports initially suggested that Ortega’s exit was due to scheduling conflicts, with news surfacing that her on-screen sister, Melissa Barrera, was also let go from the project. However, Ortega clarified in an interview that her decision was not influenced by pay or scheduling issues but rather by a sense that things were “falling apart” behind the scenes.
Speaking to The Cut, Ortega, 22, expressed that the absence of the directors and team she had grown attached to during the previous films made her question the direction of the franchise. She emphasised the importance of working with a team she resonated with and felt a genuine connection to, indicating that without them, continuing with Scream 7 didn’t align with her career goals at the time.
The actress, who starred in the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, also shared her inclination towards original and fresh storytelling over large franchise projects. Despite her involvement in several successful franchises, Ortega expressed a desire to prioritise collaborations with new directors and engage with narratives that offer unique and unexplored perspectives.
Scream 7, slated for release in February 2026, is expected to see the return of key cast members, including Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown alongside longtime stars Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. Drawing from the franchise’s roots, Kevin Williamson, the creator of the original 1996 film, will be at the helm of the upcoming sequel.
With a blend of returning and new cast members, Scream 7 promises to deliver a fresh take on the iconic horror series. The inclusion of Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, and other talented actors hints at the continuation of the franchise’s legacy while introducing new dynamics to captivate audiences.
Reflecting on her departure, Ortega’s supportive stance towards Barrera following her own exit from the project speaks volumes about the camaraderie among the Scream cast members. Their bond, both on and off-screen, underscores a sense of unity and support within the film industry, transcending the challenges that actors may face in their careers.
As production for Scream 7 commences, the anticipation among fans continues to build, eager to witness the evolution of the beloved horror saga on the big screen once again. With Ortega’s departure marking a new chapter for the franchise, the upcoming instalment is poised to captivate audiences with its blend of familiar faces and fresh talent, offering a promising continuation of the Scream legacy.
