Naomi Watts and Bill Murray have taken their longstanding friendship from real life to the big screen with their new film, “The Friend.” The two actors first bonded while working together on the 2014 movie “St. Vincent” and have maintained a close relationship ever since. In their latest project, Watts, 56, portrays a New York City novelist who unexpectedly finds herself caring for her late friend’s Great Dane after his passing. Murray, 74, plays the role of Watts’ character’s deceased friend, adding complexity to their on-screen dynamic.
Reflecting on their connection, Murray shared with PEOPLE, “We made a good movie and we got to know each other professionally and like each other professionally. And then we ended up liking each other as friends. So that when this possibility came, it was easy to consider, that we could make it work again.”
Praising Watts’ performance in the film, Murray expressed his admiration, stating, “She’s great in this movie. She’s just amazing in the movie. I can’t say it enough. I’m getting hoarse from saying how good she is in the movie. But it’s really an extraordinary performance.”
Recalling her initial nerves working alongside Murray in their first collaboration, Watts remembered feeling intimidated acting alongside comedy legends like Murray and Melissa McCarthy. However, she also shared delightful memories of breaking into laughter on set due to their comedic interactions, showcasing the fun they had while filming together.
Their genuine friendship off-screen played a crucial role in portraying the emotional depth of their characters in “The Friend.” Watts highlighted the importance of their bond, stating, “It was good having known Bill and connected with him to recall all of that so that when they do come together at the end, there’s a conjuring that feels really authentic.”
Murray also emphasised the significance of their connection while shooting a poignant scene, revealing, “Even though it’s hard and challenging, you go like, ‘Let me try it again.’ And that’s kind of how we were. We kept looking at each other going, ‘You want to do it again?’ ‘Yeah, I want to do it again.’ And then we just kept slamming it.”
Aside from their professional synergy, both actors share a mutual love for dogs, which further deepened their bond on set. Watts and her husband, Billy Crudup, are known for their dog walks in New York City, while Murray fondly recalled his lifetime of canine companionship. Their shared affection for dogs resonated throughout the filming process and even inspired Murray to label the movie as the “greatest dog movie in quite some time.”
