Actor Adam DeVine recently shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast about the ongoing complications he faces due to a childhood accident involving a cement truck, which he described as a “nightmare.” DeVine, known for his roles in projects like “Righteous Gemstones,” disclosed that the incident continues to impact his health decades later.
Recalling the traumatic event, DeVine disclosed that at the age of 11, he was struck by a cement truck, nearly resulting in the amputation of both his legs. The accident left him with severe injuries, including broken bones and extensive damage to his lower body. Initially diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, DeVine later received clarification from a specialist linking his current spasms to the childhood accident rather than the syndrome.

Despite initially being informed that he had stiff-person syndrome and given a grim life expectancy prognosis, DeVine revealed that further medical consultations led to a different diagnosis. The expert he consulted concluded that the lingering muscle spasms and tightness were likely a result of the trauma sustained in the childhood accident, rather than a neurological condition.
Throughout the podcast interview, DeVine shared his journey of grappling with these health challenges and the impact they have had on his daily life. He acknowledged the difficulties he faces, such as experiencing pain while sitting, standing, and walking for prolonged periods. Devine mentioned incorporating activities like cycling and CrossFit into his routine, which may have contributed to the strain on his body.
In addition to managing his symptoms through activities like foam rolling, DeVine underwent hip surgeries in 2024 and explored treatments like stem cell therapy. He emphasised the ongoing nature of his health issues, indicating that he continues to navigate these challenges three years after their onset.
Moreover, DeVine highlighted the emotional toll of facing potential life-threatening conditions and grappling with the uncertainty surrounding his health. Sharing personal insights into how he copes with these adversities, DeVine reflected on his experiences as a father, finding solace and joy in his role despite the health struggles he confronts.
By candidly discussing the lasting repercussions of the childhood accident, DeVine sheds light on the resilience and perseverance required to navigate long-term health challenges. His story serves as a reminder of the complexities individuals may encounter in managing the aftermath of traumatic events and underscores the importance of seeking appropriate medical guidance and support.
As DeVine continues to navigate his health journey, his openness about his struggles serves as a source of inspiration for others confronting similar obstacles. By sharing his story, DeVine not only raises awareness about the enduring impact of childhood traumas but also underscores the significance of resilience and determination in facing such adversities.
