An Illinois teacher at Mason Clark Middle School in East St. Louis, Tammy Huggins, recently reported that her credit card was stolen by one of her 13-year-old students and subsequently used for a $220 spending spree. Huggins shared with KMOV-TV that upon noticing the charge for the online fashion retailer Shein, she immediately suspected the perpetrator. She recounted overhearing other students discussing a classmate’s involvement in stealing her wallet to make purchases on Shein and DoorDash.

The situation escalated when the principal of the school, Renaldo Jackson, informed Huggins that the student’s family wished to offer an apology, returning only the credit card without addressing the missing $200 spent. Huggins expressed her disappointment with the school administration’s lacklustre response, as she was still without her wallet, license, other credit cards, and the money that was used fraudulently.

Huggins took matters into her own hands by filing a police report in hopes of reclaiming her belongings. Despite her efforts, she found the school’s assistance lacking, particularly in helping her recover the stolen items. Mentioning her financial struggles as a teacher living paycheck-to-paycheck, Huggins highlighted the need for accountability from the school in addressing the theft incident.

Following an investigation launched by the school district into the theft, a suspect was initially identified but lacked evidence to confirm involvement. However, on March 24, the student’s parents came forward, disclosing their child’s participation, leading to the student facing disciplinary action as per the school’s Code of Conduct. The student’s family offered full restitution and items, accompanied by a written apology.
In a statement to KMOV-TV, the East St. Louis School District assured that they take all reports of lost or missing property seriously, addressing them in accordance with their policies and procedures. They underscored their commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students and staff, aiming to foster integrity and responsibility within their school community.
Despite the incident’s resolution and disciplinary actions taken against the student, Huggins’ story sheds light on the challenges faced by educators in addressing theft incidents within schools. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting teachers in navigating such situations and ensuring the safety and security of school environments for both students and staff.
As the case unfolds, it prompts reflection on the broader issues of accountability and safeguarding within educational institutions. The aftermath of the theft incident underscores the significance of protocols and support systems in place to address such challenges effectively. Huggins’ experience serves as a rallying call for schools to proactively tackle instances of theft and uphold a culture of responsibility and respect within their communities.
