Viola Davis recently opened up about her experience working with the late Chadwick Boseman on the set of the film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” In a candid interview with The Times, the 59-year-old actress shared her initial feelings towards Boseman, revealing that she was initially “a little judgmental” of his behaviour on set. Little did she know at that time that Boseman was battling colon cancer and was in his final days.

Davis, who portrayed blues singer Ma Rainey in the film, mentioned that she observed Boseman being supported by his wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, and his makeup artist as they helped him prepare for his role as Levee Green. She recalled witnessing them providing him with physical and emotional support, which she initially misunderstood. The actress shared her regret over misjudging the situation and not realising the gravity of Boseman’s condition.

The film, released on Netflix posthumously, showcased Boseman’s incredible talent and earned him critical acclaim, including a posthumous win at the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Known for his iconic roles in “Black Panther” and various biopics, Boseman left a lasting impact on audiences worldwide. Davis praised Boseman’s authenticity and integrity, highlighting his ability to bring depth and truth to his performances.
In a touching tribute to Boseman, Davis expressed her belief that the actor’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations. She emphasised that Boseman’s contributions to the film industry extended beyond his on-screen portrayals, pointing out his larger-than-life personality and commitment to his craft. The actress honoured Boseman during her acceptance speech at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, acknowledging his influence on her work and the industry as a whole.
Despite the initial reservations Davis had about Boseman’s behaviour on set, she came to deeply respect him for his dedication and professionalism. She recognised his unwavering passion for his craft and his ability to embody his characters with sincerity and depth. Davis commended Boseman for his impact on the film industry and his lasting legacy as a talented and genuine artist.
Looking ahead, Davis is set to star in the upcoming film “G20,” scheduled for release on Prime Video in April. As she continues her own career in Hollywood, Davis carries the memory of her time working with Boseman and the profound impact he had on her both personally and professionally. The actress’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the lasting influence of Boseman’s talent and character in the world of entertainment.
