A young woman, Kaitlyn Jenkins, woke up in a hospital room feeling disoriented and panicked after undergoing a craniocervical fusion surgery. This surgery was recommended by a specialised neurosurgeon to address her Chiari malformation type 1, craniocervical instability (CCI), and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) conditions. These conditions had caused her chronic pain and required multiple surgeries in the past. However, waking up from this particular surgery turned into what she described as a “living nightmare.”

Jenkins, who was only 20 at the time, found herself handcuffed and unable to communicate with her family. The medical team had placed her on a ventilator for respiratory support needs and used soft restraints to prevent her from pulling it out. Despite this common practice, Jenkins felt overwhelmed and scared. She recounted the feeling of helplessness, like being trapped inside her body, unable to move or speak.

Communication became a challenge for Jenkins, who resorted to tracing letters on her mother’s hand to convey her urgent need for her boyfriend by her side. The inability to express herself or ask for help added to her panic, making the already distressing situation even more unbearable. Only after the swelling subsided, and she could breathe independently, were the restraints and ventilator removed.
The physical recovery was just one aspect of her journey, as Jenkins highlighted the emotional and mental toll the experience took on her. She emphasised the importance of clear and thorough patient communication, noting that she was not adequately informed about the possibility of waking up restrained and unable to speak post-surgery. Jenkins stressed the necessity for transparent conversations between medical teams and patients, especially before life-altering surgeries.
Complications following the surgery, such as osteolysis, nerve pain, and mobility issues, further challenged Jenkins’ recovery process. These setbacks prolonged her hospital stay and required ongoing medical attention and physical therapy. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Jenkins remained determined and found strength in her support system comprising her family and boyfriend.
Jenkins’ experience has transformed her perspective on surgery and healthcare communication, leading her to advocate for improved patient-provider interactions. She has learned to appreciate her resilience and the unwavering support of her loved ones through these trying times. Despite the setbacks and uncertainties in her recovery journey, Jenkins remains hopeful and determined to regain control over her health.
This story underscores the significance of effective communication in healthcare settings and the impact it can have on patients’ experiences and outcomes. By sharing her ordeal, Jenkins hopes to raise awareness and promote better understanding and support for individuals navigating complex medical procedures. Her courage and advocacy serve as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges in their healthcare journeys.
