In a recent interview on CBS Mornings, Amy Acton, newly elected Governor of Ohio, expressed her firm intention to avoid any communication with her opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, following a contentious election campaign. Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur, had notably run an aggressive attack ad that involved Acton’s childhood trauma, leading to widespread condemnation.

Acton, who made history as the first woman to hold the governorship in Ohio, conveyed her sentiments on November 6, rejecting Ramaswamy’s overture of goodwill following his concession speech. He claimed to have left a voicemail congratulating her on her election victory, but Acton clarified, “I have no intention of speaking to him.” She stressed the importance of accountability among leaders, reflecting on the negative impact of Ramaswamy’s campaign tactics.

The campaign took an especially dark turn in its final weeks when Ramaswamy launched an advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur. This ad alluded to Acton’s traumatic experiences of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather, Cledith Arthur, during her childhood. Addressing the advert, Acton described it as “a terrible and despicable thing to do,” suggesting that it stemmed from Ramaswamy’s struggles in the race.
During her interview, she reiterated her disappointment, stating, “These ads have been full of lies and hate and vitriol the entire campaign.” The emotional weight of the ad campaign clearly took a toll on Acton, who conveyed a deep sense of hurt over the exploitation of her past for political gain.
In the controversial one-minute video, Donna Arthur is heard stating, “Don’t let her become your governor. If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself.” The ad made damaging claims about Acton’s honesty and character, which further inflamed tensions leading up to the election.
According to legal documents, Cledith Arthur was arrested for the rape of Acton when she was twelve years old. Court records indicate that he pleaded not guilty to the charges and subsequently became a fugitive. Acton’s brother, Philip Stearns, also weighed in on the matter, releasing his own advertisement in condemnation of Ramaswamy’s actions, highlighting the severe abuse Acton suffered during her childhood.
Stearns did not hold back in his criticism of Ramaswamy, describing the advertisement as “despicable” and asserting that it represented a new low in political campaigning. “This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core,” he remarked.
The controversy surrounding the Ramaswamy advert has not only provoked strong reactions from Democrats but has also elicited condemnation from some Republicans. The ad was deemed a nadir of the election campaign, which had already been described as one of the most polarising and expensive races in the nation.
In contrast to the vitriol of the campaign, Acton articulated a vision for her governorship focused on unity and decency. Citing feedback from Ohio voters, she noted that there is a desire for leaders who are committed to solving problems rather than perpetuating an environment of conflict and chaos. “Kindness isn’t weakness,” she asserted, reinforcing her message of thoughtful leadership.
As Acton prepares to take office, she intends to champion public service and foster a collaborative atmosphere in Ohio. Her candidacy seems to reflect a broader yearning among voters for civility and genuine commitment to public welfare, endeavours that Acton hopes to embody during her tenure.
