A former police officer in Tennessee has been found guilty of misconduct after handcuffing a three-year-old child during what was purported to be a “Scared Straight” demonstration. Kyle Hunter Scott, aged 23, received a conviction for misdemeanor assault and attempted official oppression following a two-day trial in Sumner County Criminal Court. The jury delivered its verdict on Thursday, November 5.

The court heard that Scott’s actions, which were captured on video, led to his arrest and subsequent termination from the Lawrenceburg Police Department. The footage, recorded inside the child’s home, showed Scott entering the premises while the child was visibly distressed and crying. In the video, Scott was observed wearing a police-issued service vest as he confronted the small boy, accusing him of damaging property within the household.

Prosecutors described how Scott escalated the situation, even as the child pleaded for him to stop. He allegedly picked the child up, placed him face down, and placed handcuffs on his wrists while the boy begged to be released. The District Attorney’s office reported that throughout this ordeal, Scott told the child to “stop resisting” as he carried him out of the house, leading the boy to believe he was under arrest.

The incident reportedly unfolded on May 25, 2025, and was premeditated, involving a coordination between Scott, his girlfriend, and the child’s mother, who had expressed frustration over the toddler’s behaviour at home. Authorities detailed that the actions were part of a misguided attempt to intimidate the child into better behaviour.
Following the incident, child services intervened and removed the boy from the home. Scott was subsequently dismissed from his position as a police officer. The child’s mother faced her own legal repercussions, being charged with child neglect and failing to report abuse. Other adults present at the time also faced charges for failing to report the abuse, as outlined by prosecutors.
The verdict against Scott carries potential penalties of up to 17 months and 29 days in county jail. The case has drawn attention to the potential misconduct within law enforcement ranks and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with the role of a police officer. It also highlights the vulnerabilities faced by children and the importance of protecting them from harmful situations.
The public response to the case has been significant, with many expressing outrage at Scott’s actions. There has been a call for accountability and increased scrutiny over how officers engage with the community, especially the most vulnerable members of society, such as children.
