Kevin McEnroe, the son of Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal, has opened up about the challenges of growing up under the shadow of his mother’s struggles with addiction, as well as his own journey towards recovery. In a candid discussion, McEnroe reflected on his upbringing, his mother’s health issues, and his commitment to honesty in his writing.

McEnroe has been inspired to share his experiences on his Substack newsletter, titled “Serenity Side Down.” He began this venture after a life-altering incident in 2020, when O’Neal suffered a near-fatal stroke following a drug overdose. At that time, McEnroe was attending rehabilitation for substance abuse when he received the distressing news from his sister, Emily. “I spent the next month there fielding calls about her progress and if she was still alive,” he recalled.

As his mother’s medical proxy, McEnroe was thrust into the position of having to make critical decisions about her care. He was presented with difficult questions about her condition, including whether they should withdraw life support. “They asked me if I wanted to pull the plug,” he explained. Ultimately, he chose to advocate for giving her a chance, saying, “I think she would want to try.”
Now sober for seven years, McEnroe credits the experience of caring for his mother with helping him regain belief in himself. “In helping my mum, I started to believe I could help other people,” he remarked. This conviction has driven his desire to become a better man and to advocate for those affected by addiction.
Reflecting on his childhood, McEnroe admitted that he often had to conceal the turbulent reality of his family life. “I had grown up having to hide what was going on with my mother,” he said. He described a significant dissonance between O’Neal’s public persona, as a highly acclaimed actress, and her private struggles. “There was this unbelievable chasm between how she presented herself and who she actually was,” he stated.
The family’s plight was magnified when O’Neal was arrested for drug possession in 2008. McEnroe felt immense guilt at that time for pursuing his education, fearing that he had abandoned her while she needed help. Like O’Neal, he himself fell into the grips of addiction, turning to alcohol and painkillers during this tumultuous period.
His relationship with writing began during his college years, where he honed his skills as a means of coping with his experiences. In 2014, he released his debut novel, “Our Town,” which portrayed the struggles of his maternal grandmother, actress Joanna Moore, who also battled addiction. However, a subsequent book tour in 2016 alongside his mother was far from the triumph he had hoped for. He described the event as distressing, noting how both he and O’Neal were “not behaving that way behind the scenes,” while attempting to project a more polished image.
As both reality and struggles loomed large, McEnroe’s reliance on substances increased. He became acutely aware of the gravity of the situation, even contemplating his own mortality, saying, “I remember thinking my mum is going to be at my funeral. That doesn’t seem right.” His downward spiral culminated in a hospitalisation for liver failure in late 2019, which eventually led to him re-entering rehab, just before the shocking news of his mother’s overdose.
Throughout these experiences, he discovered the importance of empathy in understanding his mother’s choices. “In recovery, I learned how to show up for people,” he explained. “It helped me to understand my mum better. To actually feel she wasn’t choosing drugs over us. I don’t have to be angry anymore.”
O’Neal, now two years sober herself and recovering steadily from her stroke, has lauded her son’s ability to express himself with such candour. “He has brutal honesty, which is beautiful,” she said, acknowledging the strength they both share in their journey towards healing. Emily McEnroe shared similar sentiments about her brother, noting that his raw honesty has a powerful appeal to others.
Kevin McEnroe is keen to distinguish the stark reality of their lives from the Hollywood glamour surrounding his mother. “If they like the glamorous Tatum O’Neal story, that’s out there. But the reality, which I think is a much better story, is here too,” he asserted, framing their experience as one of survival and resilience in the face of hardship.
Ultimately, McEnroe’s narratives aim to inspire honesty and connection, allowing others to see the truth beneath the surface of celebrity life and addiction. His ongoing efforts to advocate for transparency and understanding are pivotal not just for his own journey but also for those grappling with similar struggles.
