Authorities in Colorado have confirmed the recovery of human remains belonging to Pablo Araya Rojas, a man who went missing over a year ago. The remains were discovered on October 23, 2026, during a hunting expedition in a remote area of Bocco Mountain, situated close to the town of Wolcott, approximately 20 miles west of Vail.

The discovery of Rojas’s remains was made by a hunter who was “sighting in his rifle” when he came across the skeletal remains, as reported by the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. This unfortunate find was further complicated by the presence of a bear cub at the scene. The cub, without its mother, lingered around the area, prompting deputies to enlist the assistance of Colorado Parks and Wildlife to secure the location and ensure the cub’s safety.

Investigators believe that the young bear may have played a role in uncovering the remains, as it reportedly frequented the area where Rojas was found. Despite thorough searches, the mother bear was not located, nor did the cub return once the investigation was underway.
Pablo Araya Rojas, aged 31, had been reported missing since October 21, 2025. His last known whereabouts were near U.S. Highway 131 and Ute Creek, an intersection close to a local landfill. When he was reported missing, police noted that his phone had shown activity in Edwards, approximately seven miles from where his remains were later discovered. Notably, both his vehicle and a mini e-bike were found abandoned at his apartment.
The Eagle County Coroner’s Office is currently investigating the cause of death and has notified Rojas’s next of kin. Authorities have indicated that there is no ongoing threat to the community surrounding the investigation area. They assure the public that all leads related to the case are still being pursued diligently.
The sad reality of Rojas’s disappearance has highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in locating missing persons in remote terrains. The terrain in which Rojas was found is rugged and often makes search efforts complex. The involvement of search and rescue teams, including the Vail Mountain Search and Rescue, underscores the collaborative efforts taken by various agencies to bring resolution to such cases.
Following the discovery, community members have expressed their sympathies and condolences for Rojas’s family. Many locals have taken to social media platforms to share their grief and memories of the man who was loved and missed dearly. A community vigil has been proposed to gather together in remembrance of Rojas and to support his grieving family during this tragic time.
As further investigations continue, local authorities remain committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding Rojas’s disappearance and subsequent death. The emotional toll of the situation has not gone unnoticed, prompting discussions about the importance of mental health resources and support for families affected by similar tragedies in the community.
In the wake of these developments, both the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and local representatives have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any additional information that may assist in furthering the investigation.
