In a dramatic rescue operation, a man was saved after spending nearly 12 hours trapped in a tree above the rapidly rising waters of the Salt River near Tempe, Arizona. The incident unfolded just after midnight when the man, who remains unnamed, became stranded due to unexpectedly high water levels.

The man had been taking shelter in the riverbed roughly a mile east of Tempe Town Lake when the situation took a turn for the worse. Overnight, the water surged, prompting him to climb into a nearby tree in a bid to escape the floods. Ultimately, he found himself trapped, unable to descend safely as the current intensified. His precarious position was finally brought to the attention of local emergency services at around 11 a.m. on Monday, November 2.

According to the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, the rescue operation faced significant challenges due to the swollen river and steep banks. Firefighters were unable to approach the stranded individual directly because of the swift water conditions. Joe Escontrias, Assistant Chief of Operations with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue, expressed concern for the man’s safety as he showed visible signs of fatigue while clinging to the tree.
“We could visually see him in the tree, and you could see that he was getting fatigued,” Escontrias stated. This immediate concern for the man’s wellbeing prompted crews to reconsider their initial plan of using a raft to reach him. As the urgency of the situation grew, it was concluded that an aerial rescue would be the safest approach.
A helicopter from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was deployed to assist in the operation. Rescuers lowered one of their team members on a long line to the stranded man, successfully hoisting him from the tree and away from the perilous waters below. Despite the lengthy ordeal of being stranded, authorities reported that when he was finally brought to safety, he appeared to be alert and in relatively good spirits.
Post-rescue, the man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He was identified as unhoused and had reportedly been residing in the riverbed before the incident occurred. His miraculous escape from a potentially tragic situation draws attention to the risks associated with rising water levels in the area.
In light of this incident, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning over the weekend regarding the dangers of increased water levels. They stressed the importance of avoiding the river during such conditions, stating: “Never attempt to drive or walk through flowing water. Turn around, don’t drown.”
The regional emergency services are urging residents to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall, as water levels can rise rapidly and create hazardous conditions. The events surrounding this rescue serve as a grim reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the critical nature of adherence to safety advisories.
As investigations continue and authorities assess the man’s situation, the community is coming together in relief that he was saved from what could have been a tragic outcome. The combined efforts of emergency responders illustrate the importance of quick action and teamwork in addressing life-threatening emergencies.
This incident underscores the vital role of emergency services in ensuring public safety and highlights a growing need for community awareness regarding the risks posed by natural water bodies during adverse weather conditions. As the rescue operation concludes, local officials are now focusing on enhanced public outreach to educate residents about the dangers of floods and the crucial message of safety first.
