Jalen Hurts, the star quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, will not be returning to play this season due to serious health concerns, having been diagnosed with multiple blood clots in his lungs. This unfortunate news has unfolded as the Eagles sit at the bottom of the NFC East with a dismal 2-6 record entering Week 9 of the NFL season.

The 28-year-old Hurts visited the Eagles’ practice facility on 4 November, marking his first appearance since being placed on injured reserve in mid-October. His presence was a welcome sight for teammates, many of whom had not seen him since he was sidelined. Reports indicate that Hurts participated in team meetings but opted not to address the squad directly, with many noting that his visit served as a positive morale boost.

Hurts’ health problems began during a game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars on 11 October, where he was first diagnosed with a superficial blood clot. However, his condition took a worrying turn, and following a series of tests, he was officially declared out for the remainder of the season on 19 October, as doctors confirmed multiple pulmonary emboli — a condition where blood clots travel to the lungs from other body parts — alongside deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

His agent, Nicole Lynn, released a statement regarding Hurts’ health. She assured fans that he is currently stable and does not face significant functional limitations. However, she confirmed that he will require a blood-thinning medication and will be prohibited from any contact sports, including football.
Eagles’ head coach, Nick Sirianni, stated that he has maintained constant communication with Hurts throughout this challenging period. He expressed his longing for the quarterback, emphasising the team’s collective support for his recovery. “I know he’s resting and recovering, and we’re all still praying for him and hoping for a speedy recovery,” Sirianni said.
The Eagles’ coaching staff has faced criticism and scrutiny over their decisions regarding Hurts’ health, particularly the choice to allow him to travel abroad for the London game. Sirianni defended these decisions, maintaining that player health is always a top priority. He highlighted that the team’s philosophy emphasises togetherness and the well-being of its players.
Despite the Eagles’ current struggles on the field, Hurts’ return, albeit in a supportive role off the turf, has underlined his dedication to the team. His positive spirit remains a source of encouragement during a season filled with challenges. As the team prepares for an upcoming match against the New York Giants on 8 November, the atmosphere within the Eagles locker room has the potential to be uplifted by Hurts’ commitment and presence.
As the situation continues to develop, fans and teammates alike remain hopeful for Hurts’ full recovery. The Eagles are now tasked with navigating the remainder of the season without one of their key players as they strive to improve on their current standing.
