British extreme adventurer Ash Dykes has successfully completed a challenging 18-day expedition along the Sangha River in the Congo Basin. This journey marks the conclusion of the first leg of his ambitious Project Six, a series of six extreme expeditions that he aims to complete consecutively.

Upon returning to the comfort of a hotel after his nearly 500-mile trek, Dykes indulged in a well-deserved meal of a burger and a beer, a stark contrast to the freeze-dried meals that had sustained him during his time on the river. “The first thing I did was get a beer and a burger in the hotel that I arrived at,” he recounted, reflecting on the experience just days after his return. “It was so good.”
Dykes kept in close contact with his fiancée throughout the expedition, thanks to a Starlink satellite connection. However, the improved communication came with its own challenges, as Dykes’ fiancée often found herself anxious after viewing videos from his journey that showed him in close proximity to wildlife, including silverback gorillas and swarming bees. “I could reassure her where we are, what we’re doing, and eating well,” he explained, chuckling at the nervous moments that arose from her viewing the footage.
Once back in the UK, Dykes relished the conveniences of modern living, particularly the simple pleasures of being able to converse without the constant interruptions from pests. “To just be talking and not swatting or itching or scratching every second—it’s quite nice,” he shared, highlighting the relentless nature of insects that plagued him throughout the expedition.
With his latest journey completed, Dykes is now gearing up for the next phase of Project Six, which he will embark upon in just a few weeks. While he remains tight-lipped about the exact location, he mentioned that it will feature significantly colder conditions and will require a set of skills that he has yet to master. “I’m really looking forward to the next one,” he teased, hinting at the challenges that await him.
Preparation for the upcoming expedition involves not only physical training but also logistical arrangements. Dykes is keen on regaining the 13 pounds he lost during his river journey, ensuring that he is fully fit for the next challenge. He also plans to enhance his livestreaming capabilities, a lesson learned after his team faced communication issues during the Congo expedition.
Towards the end of his last journey, there were moments of uncertainty when Dykes and his crew lost contact with their support team, which led to anxious moments for friends and family. It was later revealed that their communication failure stemmed from a dead power bank that inhibited their ability to share updates. “We’re going to make sure we have power all the way through,” he noted. “We just want to live stream and post as much as we can.”
Dykes expressed confidence that the next expedition will allow for improved communication, especially since it will occur in an environment that does not restrict access to the sky. “It isn’t in the jungle, right? So we will have full access to the sky 24/7,” he explained, demonstrating his focus on overcoming previous hurdles.
As he prepares for this next stage of Project Six, Ash Dykes continues to embody the spirit of exploration and adventure. His journey serves not only as an inspiration to aspiring adventurers but also highlights the importance of preparation and adaptation in the face of the unknown challenges that extreme expeditions can present. As he sets his sights on the next destination, the adventure community eagerly awaits the announcement of where Dykes will take his skills next.
