Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, where the situation was described as “chaotic” by Sergeant Michael McLaughlin of the British Columbia RCMP Highway Patrol. One passenger was critically injured in the crash and was airlifted to hospital for urgent medical attention. Six others were transported to nearby hospitals, with two of them reported to be in serious condition, while the remaining four were stabilised.
The bus was chartered by Iren, an Australian data company, which confirmed that the vehicle was being operated by one of its contractors at the time of the accident. Matt Epting, a spokesperson for the company, expressed their concern for the individuals onboard, stating that they were working closely with emergency responders and the authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Both Mackenzie and District Hospital, as well as the University Hospital of Northern B.C., activated a “code orange” protocol to handle the influx of patients resulting from the accident. This protocol allows hospitals to adjust their normal operations in response to a mass casualty incident to ensure all victims receive the necessary care. The code was lifted by 3:30 p.m. at Mackenzie Hospital and was subsequently rescinded an hour later at the university hospital.
The precise cause of the accident remains under investigation. Local police have made an appeal for any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward, as they work to piece together the details leading to the crash.
Highway 39, which is situated roughly 600 miles north of Vancouver, is known for its challenging driving conditions. The nature of the crash has raised concerns about road safety, especially given the number of individuals affected.
No arrests have been made as the investigation continues. Officials have noted the importance of gathering all pertinent information before drawing any conclusions. Sergeant McLaughlin commented on the need for thorough investigation processes, indicating that it will take time to fully understand the series of events that led to the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, the community of Mackenzie is coming together to support those affected by the accident. Local residents have expressed their sympathy and concern for the victims and their families, illustrating the impact that such incidents can have on smaller communities.
The B.C. RCMP’s Highway Patrol, along with other emergency services, continue to monitor the situation closely. Both the public and officials are hopeful for a swift recovery for those injured and a resolution to the investigation into the crash.
