In a devastating turn of events, a private jet crash in Palm Beach County, Florida, on 1 November resulted in the deaths of all nine individuals aboard, including 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras. A long-time friend of Filgueiras, Mikaela Schluth, has spoken emotively about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, noting the young pilot’s remarkable composure during her final moments.

Mikaela Schluth recounted to CBS News how difficult it was to hear the last communications from Filgueiras with air traffic control. “It was definitely, probably the worst thing I’ve ever heard,” she lamented. Despite the dire conditions, Schluth praised her friend for her commendable calmness and clarity in the face of extreme crisis. “I’m just so proud of how she handled it and how she was able to stay calm and give information up until the last minute,” she added.

The Learjet 60 was en route from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when disaster struck at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. According to reports, turbulence and ice accumulation were first relayed by the pilots. However, the situation quickly escalated, prompting an urgent distress call from Filgueiras. Recordings from LiveATC.net reveal a tense exchange with air traffic control, as her tone changed from calm to frantic. She was heard stating, “We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000 feet per minute,” before acknowledging the grim likelihood of a crash.
Upon impact, the jet collided with a residential neighbourhood in southeastern Florida, and all lives aboard were tragically lost. Efforts are currently ongoing to investigate the events leading up to the crash, with the National Transportation Safety Board taking charge of the inquiry.
Among the victims were members of a family from Michigan, identified as Adam Robinson, Helen Sharp, and their two children, Charlie and Emma. Their nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, was also on board, as well as passengers Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. Families of the victims have since issued calls for privacy during their time of grief, a sentiment echoed in a joint statement released following the tragedy.
Filgueiras had amassed over 1,300 hours of flight experience, having earned her pilot’s licence at just 17. Her mother, Camila Corteleti, elaborated on her daughter’s passion for aviation: “She loved the freedom… It was completely different seeing the world from the top.” At the time of the incident, she was employed by Upper Jets, a private charter service in Florida.
The crash has spurred a thorough investigation by authorities, as the NTSB works to recover wreckage from the site of the impact. Thomas Chapman, a member of the NTSB, commented during a press briefing, stating that officials are in pursuit of valuable evidence, including the aircraft’s black box recorder. However, he warned that it remains uncertain whether such a device was on board.
“Our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened,” Chapman noted, highlighting the need to ensure similar incidents are prevented in the future.
As the investigation continues, tributes to Filgueiras and the other victims are pouring in from various communities. Friends and family are coming together to honour their memories, reflecting on the lives lost in this tragic accident.
In the face of this horrific event, the aviation community and those touched by the lives lost are united in grief, seeking answers and closure in the coming days and weeks.
