Larry and Helen Frey, a couple hailing from Saskatchewan, Canada, are celebrating a remarkable milestone this year as they mark their 75th wedding anniversary. Reflecting on their decades together, the pair has witnessed significant changes in both their personal lives and the world around them since tying the knot on a chilly day in 1951.

In an interview with the CBC, the couple recalled the early days of their relationship, which was marked by horseback rides along rugged trails. Larry, now 96, remembered their early dates fondly, noting the charm—and challenges—of their time spent riding on horseback through the largely undeveloped area where they lived. At the time of their wedding, their home was without electricity, and they were accustomed to the more laborious tasks of daily life.

“On the night of our wedding, you would light a fire and get everything warmed up,” Larry explained. “That’s how tough life was back then.” The couple shared that, at that point, paved roads were scarce in their community, making their reliance on horses all the more significant for travel. Today, they find themselves cruising around the countryside in a state-of-the-art electric vehicle, a testament to the advancements in technology they have embraced over the years.
Helen, who is now 97, echoed Larry’s sentiments regarding the most transformative changes they have experienced. She described the difference an electric home has made in their lives, particularly in comparison to the days of having no running water or electricity. “You didn’t have to go down the cellar to get something to eat,” Larry noted while discussing the conveniences of modern life. “A refrigerator, a block heater for the car—these were big changes.”
It is not only the comforts of home that have changed for the Freys; their family has expanded significantly throughout the years. Once a two-person household, their family now includes four children, ten grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren, along with one great-great-grandchild. To celebrate their anniversary, the family will gather, creating a bustling atmosphere filled with love and connection.
Looking back on their journey together, Helen recounted the charming story of how they met. She was working as a clerk at a local store and had heard about Larry’s reputation as a kind-hearted individual. “When I first saw him walk into the store, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I chose him, and how funny-looking he is and how young he is,’” she laughed, reflecting on their initial encounter.
Larry, who playfully points out their one-year age difference, seemed unfazed by Helen’s first impression, joking, “I married an older woman because I was told they were more fun.” While he acknowledged the years have passed, he remarked on how Helen “still looks the same” as she did all those years ago, highlighting the fondness that still exists between them.
When asked for advice on sustaining a long and happy marriage, the couple offered contrasting yet complementary perspectives. Larry’s straightforward advice is simply to “button your lip” and allow your partner space when needed. Helen, on the other hand, took a more light-hearted approach. “I’m not qualified to give marriage advice,” she jested. “The years just go by, and you keep on living life.” She then shared a sweet glance at Larry, adding, “I just look at him and think, ‘Oh God, he’s mine.’ And I’m so thankful.”
As they celebrate their 75 years of marriage, the Freys serve as a reminder of how love can flourish despite the changes life brings. Their journey from horseback riding to driving electric vehicles encapsulates not only their personal evolution but also a broader narrative of societal advancement. It’s a story that embodies the spirit of endurance, adaptability, and, above all, love that grows with the years.
