At 42 years old and a dedicated mother, Beckler undertook the challenge of renovating the family’s residence after the death of her father-in-law in 2019 due to cancer. The decision to move into the house, a strategy designed to provide stability for her husband’s sister, who has a developmental disability, was not without its difficulties. They sold their own home and agreed with her husband’s siblings to manage the family home’s mortgage. However, what awaited them was a house that required extensive updates to shed its 1990s aesthetic.

Determined to enliven the interiors while being mindful of the budget, Beckler began tackling each room one at a time. Rather than hiring professionals, she sought to uncover her own potential for DIY projects, quickly gaining confidence in the process. Beckler’s initial project involved the application of a blue accent wall in the living room, inspired by a captivating shade of blue that she ultimately managed to replicate at a more reasonable price through a local paint store.

By 2021, she was ready to take a bolder step by painting the entire living room in the same blue hue, and her renovations continued with her recently completed flooring project. It was this series of upgrades that sparked an idea for a feature that would provide the room with the character it had been lacking: custom-built floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Drawing inspiration from design images, Beckler envisioned a library that would showcase her treasured collection of antique books and vintage finds. Despite some initial reservations about how the built-ins might modify the room’s dimensions, she pressed on, motivated by a newfound confidence gained from previous DIY successes. “I didn’t have a grand plan for what the living room would eventually become,” she reflects. “Each project gave me a little more confidence to try something new.”
Opting to paint the bespoke shelves the same shade as the walls, Beckler crafted a cohesive look that blends seamlessly into the room. She chose one-foot by twelve-foot boards, incorporating exquisite details such as fluted casing, square rosettes, and decorative moulding, which all added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the project. The total cost for the materials was approximately £1,000, a significant cost saving compared to the estimated £8,000 it would have cost to hire a professional.
The choices Beckler made in both design and decoration revolve around personal significance and sentiment. Rather than overfilling the shelves with miscellaneous items, she has been deliberate in curating the collection, allowing space for additional treasures that might be discovered in the future. Each piece tells a unique story, from antique finds associated with family memories to books that marked moments from her wedding.
Beckler is keen to honour the history of the home, which has been a part of her husband’s family for decades, while simultaneously adding her own chapter through thoughtful enhancements. “I love finding things with history, character, and a story of their own,” she remarks. “To me, those are the things that make a home feel personal and collected over time.”
Her story is a testament to the idea that significant renovations do not always necessitate vast sums of money or professional assistance. Through her determination and skilled handiwork, Sarah Beckler has transformed a house of memories into a home enriched with her personal narrative. The success of her DIY journey illustrates how individuals can celebrate both past and present, creating living spaces that resonate with authenticity.
