In a heartfelt tribute to a dedicated public servant, Cat Jumper is honouring her late father, Sgt. Conley Jumper, by following in his footsteps as a deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) in South Carolina. Sgt. Jumper, who served the GCSO for an impressive 28 years, was tragically killed during a traffic stop on 20 October 2020, leaving behind his wife, Sara, and his daughter, Cat.

At the time of her father’s death, Cat was a pre-law student at Wofford College in Spartanburg, with aspirations of entering law school focusing on criminal law. “I had different aspirations, different kinds of goals,” she stated. “Law enforcement wasn’t really an interest at that time.” However, as she navigated her grief, she found inspiration in the way her father’s colleagues rallied around her family during their time of need.
Witnessing the camaraderie and support provided by the GCSO was transformative for Cat. “I saw the way the sheriff’s office came together for my mom and me — how they supported us,” she shared. Her experience at the sheriff’s office helped her to find a sense of belonging. “Being around these people makes me happy, makes me feel secure and safe,” she added.

In addition to the strong support system from her father’s colleagues, Cat also received touching letters from members of the community whose lives were positively impacted by her father. One letter from a grandmother described how Conley had made a difference in her grandson’s life, allowing him to play with police dogs while working side jobs. This personal connection deepened Cat’s understanding of her father’s impact and motivated her to pursue a path in law enforcement.
Having initially considered a career behind a desk, Cat recognised that law enforcement provides a unique opportunity to create a direct and meaningful impact. Later, she joined the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office in 2025 after gaining experience with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in Greenwood. As a deputy, she now patrols the same areas her father did, experiencing firsthand the legacy he left in the community.
“It’s rewarding to have someone see my name tag and make that connection,” Cat remarked. “It’s like he was out with this person at one point in time. Now, I’m out with this person at this time. It’s kind of special.” This recognition from the community reminds her of the respect afforded to her father and reinforces her commitment to uphold his legacy.
While her decision to enter law enforcement initially stirred concern within her family about reopening emotional wounds, Cat found it to be a healing process. “It has helped because I’m able to be closer to him in an indirect way,” she revealed. Wearing her father’s uniform has brought her pride and a deeper connection to his memory.
Cat’s mother has been a steadfast supporter throughout her journey, providing encouragement as Cat navigated the challenges of the police academy and stepped into her role as a deputy. “She’s been the rock the entire time,” Cat expressed, affirming that while her mother was initially surprised by Cat’s career choice, she instinctively understood that it was where Cat was meant to be.
Reflecting on her father’s principles, Cat strives to emulate the respectful treatment he afforded others. “I’m gonna treat people with respect — how I would like to be treated. How I would like my dad to be treated is how I treat people,” she explained. This commitment to kindness and respect is guiding her approach to her work as a deputy, ensuring that her father’s spirit continues to influence her interactions with the community.
In honour of Sgt. Jumper’s contributions, the Greenville County Schools established the Sgt. William Conley Jumper Jr. School Security Center in Taylors, South Carolina, on the fifth anniversary of his death. The institution serves as a testament to his decade-long dedication to school law enforcement.
The anniversary of her father’s passing can still be challenging for Cat and her mother. They have learned to approach this day like any other, attempting to embrace normalcy amidst profound loss. “When you have such a profound loss, it’s like it’s always gonna be there,” Cat concluded, acknowledging that the journey of grief is filled with ups and downs.
Through her dedication and commitment to law enforcement, Cat Jumper is not only honouring her father’s legacy but also ensuring that his impact in the community continues to thrive. In doing so, she has transformed her own journey of grief into a powerful story of resilience and service.
