In a tragic incident that has shocked the Bronx community, 15-year-old Javits Frimpong was fatally shot while on his way to school on 29 October. The young boy, who had recently moved to the United States from Ghana in search of a better life, succumbed to his injuries after being attacked not far from his home.

Javits was discovered with a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the vicinity of East 171st Street and Crotona Place at approximately 9:24 a.m. on Thursday. Emergency services transported him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later passed away, sparking outrage and heartache among his family and local residents.

His father, Thomas Frimpong, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his son and claims to know the identities of those responsible for the shooting. In interviews with media outlets, he disclosed that he believed his son had been the victim of bullying at school. He indicated that the students allegedly involved in the harassment had recently faced disciplinary action and were suspended.
“The principal told me Javits is innocent. Javits is innocent. He was defending himself,” said Thomas, conveying his anguish over the incident. He explained that his son had only been in the US for a year, moving from Ghana to live with him while his mother remained in West Africa. Thomas described how his wife has been devastated, saying, “She couldn’t talk. She’s crying. She said, unless she sees the body, she don’t believe it.”
The heart-wrenching circumstances surrounding Javits’s tragic end unfolded shortly after Thomas had woken his son for school that morning. In a choking voice, he recounted the last moments they shared, struggling to find words as he stood surrounded by members of the community.
CCTV footage has captured three masked individuals in dark clothing fleeing the area shortly after the gunfire erupted. Witnesses reported that Javits attempted to flee from his assailants, only to collapse approximately a block away from the scene of the shooting. “I know them, I definitely do!” Thomas stated emphatically when discussing those he believes are responsible for his son’s death. “He don’t know anybody here. He don’t go out.”
Despite his father encouraging him to engage more with peers and to play outside, Thomas shared that Javits was often a reclusive child. “My son was precious, very clever,” he lamented, highlighting his son’s character and intellect. The family insists that he was not the type to engage in trouble, with the school confirming that he had always been quiet and punctual.
The NYPD have launched an investigation into the shooting but, as of the latest reports, have yet to make any arrests. A spokesperson for the department confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing, and they are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Individuals with knowledge of the case are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
As the community mourns the loss of a young life cut short, Thomas Frimpong is determined to seek justice for his son. The emotional toll of the tragedy resonates deeply, casting a shadow over what should have been an exciting new chapter in a young immigrant’s life.
