A boat explosion during a snorkelling excursion in Indonesia has sent multiple tourists leaping into the sea, raising serious safety concerns. The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time on Thursday, 29 October, near Gamat Bay, a well-known tourist destination off Nusa Penida Island, according to various reports.

Eyewitness footage reveals a frightening scene as flames and smoke billowed from the small vessel, prompting panic among those aboard. Four tourists, along with their guide and the boat’s captain, I Kadek Dwiyana, were forced to abandon ship and enter the water in a desperate attempt to escape the blaze. Fortunately, another boat passing nearby around 2:50 p.m. was able to assist the group and ensure their safety.

The captain, aged 31, suffered burns to his legs from the incident and was swiftly transported to Gema Santhi Hospital on Nusa Penida for urgent medical care. Reports indicate that he remained on the boat longer than the others, possibly contributing to the injuries he sustained. Fortunately, no other injuries have been reported among the tourists involved.
The guide accompanying the tourists, Made Wirya, reaffirmed to authorities that both the safety equipment and the condition of the boat had been thoroughly inspected prior to departure. This suggests that the incident may not have been due to negligence on the part of the crew or operator.
The ill-fated excursion had been planned to explore various scenic spots, including Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, and Gamat Bay, which are popular among snorkelling enthusiasts. It is unclear what led to this alarming explosion, but initial investigations have pointed towards an electrical fault as a possible cause. Early reports suggest that sparks may have ignited fuel, leading to the rapid spread of the fire.
As of now, the official cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Klungkung Police have not provided any commentary about the case as of Saturday, 31 October.
This event raises broader questions about safety protocols in the rapidly growing tourism industry in Indonesia, particularly in regions known for water-based recreational activities. Operators and authorities are expected to examine their procedures closely to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
As the investigation continues, the identities of the tourists involved have not yet been disclosed to the public. Those familiar with the area express concern not only for the passengers but also for the potential implications for the local tourism sector, which is vital to the economy of Nusa Penida and surrounding regions.
In light of this incident, tourists are being urged to remain vigilant during water activities and ensure their safety equipment is thoroughly checked before embarking on such excursions. Further updates on the investigation and the welfare of those involved are anticipated in the coming days.
