Sara Gore, a familiar face on NBC as the host of the real estate show *Open House* and the lifestyle programme *New York Live*, has unveiled her emotional battle with breast cancer after recently being declared cancer-free. In a conversation with PEOPLE, the 50-year-old shared her profound gratitude while highlighting that her journey is far from over, as she dedicates herself to raising awareness about early detection.

In March 2026, Gore received a cancer diagnosis that she had been preparing for psychologically, given her family history of breast cancer. Her mother and sister both faced battles with the disease, and the TV personality had diligently adhered to her mammogram schedule. However, the news still hit her hard. “It’s like this thing kind of hits you in the face,” she reflected, describing how the anticipation of a potential diagnosis did not fully prepare her for the reality of it.
In a bid to minimise the risks of a cancer recurrence, Gore opted for a double mastectomy on April 30. “I ultimately went for the double mastectomy,” she explained, noting the frightening discovery that the cancer had also been present in the other breast. “If I had only done the one, I would’ve been back in the same situation.” After the surgery, she was relieved when doctors confirmed that the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes.
Despite the successful surgery, the recovery process was both physically and emotionally challenging for Gore. “Leading up to the surgery was so hard for me,” she recalled, expressing the sheer anxiety she felt while continuing to host her show. With a heavy heart, she explained how difficult it was to disguise her emotional turmoil during that period. Following her surgery, she struggled with severe nerve pain in her right arm, compounded by emotional lows, which eventually led to feelings of isolation.
Fortunately, her recovery was buoyed by the unwavering support of family and friends, helping her navigate the emotional highs and lows of her journey. “You can’t do any of this stuff alone,” she said of the importance of having a reliable support system during such trying times. Leaning into her loved ones, Gore found the strength needed to continue her recovery.
In September, she underwent breast reconstruction surgery and is pleased with the outcome. “The major surgeries are over. And I’m thrilled that I can say that I’m cancer-free,” she expressed, sharing the immense relief she felt at that moment. Yet, she acknowledged that there is little chance of returning to ‘normal’ as the fight against breast cancer continues, both personally and in her advocacy efforts.
In the wake of her diagnosis, Gore has chosen to search for the ‘gifts’ within her experience. She sees her journey as a transformative one that instilled in her a desire to help others. “I do believe that there is a gift in this,” she noted, reflecting on how vulnerability during her journey catalysed her passion for advocacy. By utilising her platform, she aims to ensure that conversations around breast cancer are accessible and prominent.
This October, Gore has partnered with Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, motivated by her young daughter’s heartfelt concern after learning about her cancer journey. “My 9-year-old daughter said, ‘Does that mean I’m gonna get breast cancer?’ and that just broke my heart,” she recalled, underlining her determination to raise awareness and knowledge around the disease.
With a staggering statistic indicating that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, Gore passionately urges for heightened awareness. “That’s not just a number; that’s someone you know,” she emphasised while advocating for comprehensive education and resources around breast cancer. Her mission is clear: to make breast cancer an impossible issue to overlook, stressing the importance of vigilance in screening and early detection.
As she embarks on this new chapter in her life, having emerged from the shadow of cancer, Sara Gore remains a beacon of hope and resilience. By sharing her story and advocating for early detection, she hopes to empower others and contribute to the collective fight against breast cancer. Her journey may have brought her challenges, but it has also forged a purpose that she is determined to fulfil.
