A couple from Olympia, Washington, had been looking forward to a momentous occasion when tragedy struck during their 55th wedding anniversary celebration in Idaho. Roger, 76, and Debbie Harding, 73, set off for a four-day getaway intending to bask in the beauty of McCall, Idaho, only to find themselves caught in a life-threatening vehicle collision.

The Hardings had chosen McCall for its picturesque scenery, complete with a lake, to commemorate their long-standing commitment. However, their dream holiday took a disastrous turn on September 22 when they were involved in a head-on collision while travelling from McCall to Boise. The pair, already in a state of shock, are now recuperating from severe injuries at their daughter’s home in Spokane.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Roger Harding expressed the bewilderment they both felt about the rapid unfolding of the incident. “It’s hard to express really how fast it all happened,” he reflected, recalling how he was simply driving along the highway until an oncoming car unexpectedly veered into his lane. His swift instinct to steer to the right diverted them into a ditch but couldn’t prevent the impact.
Debbie recounted the moment the collision occurred—an instant that left them both dazed amidst the chaos of airbags and smoke. A good Samaritan intervened, tending to her distress while providing some comfort despite the harrowing circumstances. “All I could see was airbags hanging,” she described. “I just wanted out of the car.”
The aftermath of the crash was equally terrifying for the couple. As the emergency services arrived, they began to process the severity of their injuries. Roger sustained a severed spine, fractured sternum, and a shattered heel, whereas Debbie suffered a broken right hand, a lacerated thumb, and fractures in both ankles. “Especially when they had gotten me out… it just felt surreal,” Debbie commented on the moment she was taken away on a gurney.
Their daughter, Jenny Fitch, recounted the anxious drive of nearly six hours to reach her parents after being notified by a police officer at the scene. “We were just scared,” she remembered, grappling with the uncertainty of their condition until she received updates confirming they were stable.
After two days in separate hospitals, Roger and Debbie were finally able to reunite, a poignant moment where they held hands for the first time post-accident, sharing tears and comfort during a time of adversity. Their recovery journey began in earnest as they were later transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility, where they spent another week and a half before being discharged in mid-October.
Currently, both recovering at Jenny’s home, Roger is utilising a wheelchair and a walker, while Debbie is supported by a walker and CAM boots. The couple is thankful for the outpouring of support from family and friends throughout their rehabilitation process. They attribute their positive spirits and resilience to their active lifestyles prior to the accident.
“We have pretty strong spirits,” Debbie reflected. Roger, a retired man who had previously completed two cross-country bicycle rides, echoed his wife’s sentiments about their will to recover. “It’s actually kind of comforting that we get to do it together,” he said, appreciating the companionship that has emerged from their shared ordeal.
As they look towards the future, the couple remains hopeful and committed to their recovery, with ongoing physical therapy on the horizon. When asked about their plans to celebrate their disrupted anniversary, Debbie light-heartedly stated, “Next year for our 56th, we’re just staying home.”
Despite the trauma, Roger and Debbie Harding are determined to overcome this incident together, demonstrating resilience in a time of difficulty. Their journey serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the profound strength found in companionship.
