Laurent was in Nicaragua visiting one of her sisters who resides in Chinandega. She was accompanied by her other sister when the incident occurred on 9 October. According to reports from local authorities, the trio was crossing the Nahualapa River in the early hours of the morning, shortly after midnight. Despite the river typically being safe to cross, the recent heavy rains had increased the strength of the current, leading to the devastating accident.
In a speech reported by La Nueva Radio YA, Nicaragua’s co-president, Rosario Murillo, expressed her condolences, calling the incident “a tragedy.” She extended a message of solidarity to Laurent’s family and friends, urging everyone to remain vigilant in the face of natural hazards.
