In a poignant revelation, the case of John Richard Moulis, a man who vanished in 1997, has taken a significant turn nearly three decades later. Moulis, who was 37 at the time of his disappearance from the Orlando area, was identified posthumously following advanced DNA testing. His family, particularly his sister, learned about his identification only two days before her own passing.
Moulis was reported missing on January 21, 1997, after which his skeletal remains were found in Sanford, Florida, in March of the same year. Two individuals walking their dog stumbled upon the remains in a wooded area near Fulton Street and Mangoustine Avenue. Unfortunately, no identification was present at the scene, and a medical examiner later determined that Moulis had suffered sharp-force injuries to the head, categorising his death as homicide.

For almost 30 years, Moulis’s family lived in uncertainty, unaware of the fate that had befallen him. This changed dramatically on August 31, 2026, when advanced DNA and forensic genetic genealogy techniques led investigators to confirm the identity of the remains as those of Moulis. This breakthrough was facilitated by Othram, a Texas-based laboratory that played a crucial role in the investigation, and was reported by several local news outlets including WFTV, FOX 35 Orlando, and WESH.
Tragically, Moulis’s sister, his last surviving family member, received the news of her brother’s identification just two days before she died. Bianca Gillett, a spokesperson for the Sanford Police Department, reflected on the closure this provided to her, stating, “She had wondered what happened to her brother her whole life… it was meaningful to the investigators that they were able to give that closure to her before she passed.”
Hailing from Wisconsin, Moulis relocated to Orlando in the mid-1980s, where he resided at the Ridge Club Apartments and worked at a janitorial job at Splendid China in Kissimmee. Following his disappearance, his burgundy-and-brown 1986 Dodge Aries station wagon was located unattended at a Greyhound bus station in Orlando, leading to further concerns about his welfare.
The journey to his identification was not straightforward. Initial DNA testing attempts began in 2023 when investigators submitted a tooth from the remains for analysis. However, matches in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) proved unfruitful. The case gained momentum in 2025 after receiving grant funding which enabled more advanced testing. Bone samples were sent to Othram, leading to the development of a suitable DNA profile that was subsequently used to conduct a genetic genealogy search by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
In July 2026, investigators identified a potential close relative of Moulis, solidifying their case when DNA comparisons confirmed the skeletal remains belonged to him. Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith expressed the relief of the family in a statement, “For almost 30 years, John’s family has agonised over not knowing what happened to him, not knowing if he would one day come home. Though this information doesn’t bring John home, it does give the family the information they desperately wanted for 29 years.”
Despite the identification of Moulis, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unresolved. Authorities are keen to piece together details of his final days before his tragic demise. The Sanford Police Department is actively appealing for anyone who may have known Moulis, recently worked with him, or lived in his apartment complex during the mid-1990s to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Sanford Police Department at 407-688-5070 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477). As the investigation continues, the hope remains that further answers will emerge, shedding light on the events leading to this tragic case.
