In a heartfelt Instagram Story shared on 26 October, Kelley opened up about his experiences since starting treatment. The 45-year-old musician described his days as a mix of both “good” and “bad.” He stated, “I’ve had a few people ask me how things are going and we are team tired over here. It’s been good. The good thing is the treatment is working really well, but I will say I naively thought I would not be in so much pain.”

Despite experiencing full-body aches and fatigue as side effects of the treatment, Kelley remains optimistic. His candidness about the difficulties he faces illustrates his determination to keep a positive outlook. “It’s kind of constantly achey and really tired, but I do have my good days and my bad days,” he added. “It’s a trip, man. It’s a trip. But we’re getting through it.”

Kelley’s wife, Cassie, who has been by his side throughout this journey, also took to her Instagram to provide an update. Revealing that her husband was preparing for his fourth round of treatment, she admitted, “When people ask, ‘How are you doing?’ Honestly, the answer’s not great. We are not doing great over here.” Her words captured the emotional toll that the situation has taken on their family. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude for the moments of resilience they find each day.
Kelley, who celebrated four years of sobriety just before his cancer diagnosis, emphasised the importance of transparency in his life. He indicated his intention to share his cancer journey in a similar manner to how he has been open about his struggles with alcohol addiction. He stated, “I feel really hopeful. In the same spirit of the way we’ve shared a lot of my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little bit.”
As Kelley continues to face the challenges posed by his diagnosis, he is also committed to maintaining his professional activities. On 21 October, he made a heartfelt appearance at the CMA Dolly Parton tribute special, performing “Islands in the Stream” with his fellow Lady A band members. The experience seemed to provide him with a sense of normalcy amid the upheaval in his personal life.
Moreover, Lady A is set to release a new single titled “Bigger Picture” on 28 October, which holds particular significance for Kelley in light of his recent diagnosis. The song, which the trio recorded shortly before his health issues came to light, features poignant themes about living with cancer and the hope of a larger, divine plan.
In a statement, the band conveyed their desire to share the track at this pivotal moment: “We had no intention of putting out new music until next year, but we connected with this song so deeply when it found its way to us,” they wrote. “After sharing a little of it with you a couple of weeks ago, your responses and messages blew us away. They reminded us why this song deserves to be heard right now.”
As Kelley continues to battle his illness, his commitment to his art, family, and supporters remains steadfast. The musician’s journey offers a humanising glimpse into the realities of living with cancer while highlighting a profound source of strength and resilience. Through sharing his story publicly, Kelley not only fosters connection with fans but also illustrates the power of hope during challenging times—a theme that resonates deeply in both his personal life and his music.
