Jesse Tyler Ferguson has opened up about his journey to landing the role of Mitchell Pritchett on the critically acclaimed series “Modern Family.” The actor, who portrayed Mitchell from 2009 until the show concluded in 2020, revealed that his initial auditions did not go as planned and that producers were initially hesitant about casting him in the role he felt was meant for him.

During a recent episode of his podcast “Dinner’s On Me,” the 51-year-old actor discussed the early reluctance from casting directors to consider him for Mitchell. Instead, they intended for him to audition for the part of Cam Tucker, which eventually went to Eric Stonestreet. Ferguson, however, was confident that his skills were better suited for the role of Mitchell, the charming and often neurotic character who was portrayed as Cam’s partner.

Ferguson recounted his experience, explaining, “They did not want to see me for Mitchell and I knew that that was a better role for me.” He credited casting director Jeff Greenberg for advocating on his behalf, especially since Ferguson’s last pilot project had resulted in disappointment, leaving a negative impression with the producers. “I think they had like a bad taste in their mouth about me,” Ferguson added candidly.

Jeff Greenberg’s persistence paid off, as he ultimately convinced the producers to audition Ferguson for Mitchell. Ferguson noted, “He said, ‘You know, you really do need to see him.’” Despite his initial misgivings about being cast for a role that did not resonate with him, Ferguson’s determination and talent shone through in the auditions, leading him to secure the pivotal role.
“Modern Family,” which aired on ABC for 11 seasons, became a cultural phenomenon during its run, earning numerous awards and accolades. Ferguson’s portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett not only delighted audiences but also contributed to the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream television. His chemistry on-screen with Stonestreet’s Cam became one of the show’s highlights, further solidifying their status as a beloved television couple.
In a previous podcast episode, Ferguson touched upon the possibility of a “Modern Family” spinoff featuring him and Stonestreet. He shared that while there were discussions about extending their characters’ stories, he ultimately felt apprehensive about the idea. “It sort of felt like, as the reality of maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people,’” he explained. The actor expressed a desire to explore new roles and experiences outside of the beloved Mitchell character.
Reflecting on his time spent on “Modern Family,” Ferguson acknowledged the role had a significant impact on his career and personal growth as an actor. The show not only allowed him to showcase his talent but also afforded him the opportunity to engage deeper with themes of love and family through the lens of an LGBTQ+ relationship, which resonated with many viewers.
Ferguson’s candidness about his early challenges demonstrates the often complex path actors navigate in the entertainment industry. His story serves as a reminder that persistence and belief in one’s suitability for a role can ultimately make a difference in securing a coveted opportunity. After years on the show, Ferguson has successfully made a name for himself in Hollywood, proving that sometimes what seems like an initial setback can lead to greater triumphs.
As he moves forward in his career, Ferguson continues to embrace the lessons learned from his time on “Modern Family,” while also eagerly looking towards new projects. His journey exemplifies the importance of resilience and self-advocacy in pursuing one’s passions, inspiring both aspiring actors and fans alike.
