Alfonso Ribeiro has responded to Alexa PenaVega’s recent comments regarding the competitive nature of the dance show “Dancing with the Stars.” Ribeiro, who famously clinched victory in season 19 of the series and currently serves as the host, addressed allegations raised by PenaVega during a recent podcast episode. The actress suggested that while viewer votes play an essential role in the results, the show’s producers also consider the narrative arcs of contestants when deciding outcomes.

In a conversation shared on their podcast “LexLos,” PenaVega, who competed on season 21 alongside her husband Carlos PenaVega, recounted a moment with fellow contestant Hayes Grier. Grier expressed skepticism about the integrity of the competition, stating, “I think this show is rigged,” after being placed in the bottom rankings. He felt that, despite his large social media following, the votes may not have accurately reflected his popularity.
Ribeiro quickly refuted these claims when a clip of PenaVega’s comments circulated on TikTok, insisting, “No chance,” when it comes to any pre-determined outcomes. He elaborated that the show’s format thrives on audience engagement, emphasising that “We want everyone who’s popular to stay on. It’s basic logic.”

Following Ribeiro’s comments, the PenaVegas took to their joint TikTok account to clarify the context of the discussion. They pointed out that the shared clip only represented a portion of a broader dialogue. “The clip picks up mid-story and then goes back to the top,” Carlos noted, encouraging fans to listen to the entire episode for a fuller understanding.
In her podcast reflection, Alexa acknowledged that Grier likely had a robust base of supporters. However, she argued that the voting aspect is just one component of the show’s overall mechanics. She shared her belief that the production team also weighs judges’ scores and the narratives they want to develop. In particular, she highlighted Bindi Irwin’s compelling journey on season 21, suggesting that such captivating stories can deeply influence the audience’s connection to the show.
Irwin ultimately secured the season’s win alongside her dance partner Derek Hough, while Alexa performed with Mark Ballas, and Carlos partnered with Witney Carson. As the podcast continued, the couple reflected on their experience competing together and how it impacted their relationship. Alex candidly mentioned that her enjoyment was somewhat dampened by Carlos’ competitive nature during the show, stating, “I would have had so much more fun on the show if it were not for Carlos.”
Carlos further elaborated on the competitive atmosphere, acknowledging that their fresh marriage complicated his emotions as his new wife danced with other male professionals. He remarked, “We were freshly married. I couldn’t imagine sending her off every day to do rumba with these guys.”
The PenaVegas also spoke about the demanding nature of training for the show, where contestants typically dedicated eight to ten hours daily mastering intricate routines. Carlos expressed gratitude for having tackled this challenge together, asserting that the experience would have been overwhelmingly difficult if he had to watch from the sidelines.
The couple began their romance after meeting at a Bible study in 2012, where they formed a friendship based on shared faith before deciding to date. Carlos proposed in 2013, and they tied the knot in January 2014, later making history as the first married couple to compete in “Dancing with the Stars” that same season. Together, they have welcomed three children.
In 2022, they co-wrote a book entitled “What If Love Is the Point?” which delves into their relationship, individual experiences, and faith. In a previous interview, Alexa shared that the book retraces their journeys, touching on their childhoods, careers, and challenges in maintaining their spiritual connection.
The ongoing discussions about the integrity of competitive reality shows serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between entertainment, audience engagement, and the genuine effort of the contestants. As the PenaVega couple continues to navigate their personal and professional lives, their experiences on the dance floor remain a notable chapter in their shared story.
