According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the woman was taken by surprise when the bear approached from behind, knocking her to the ground. The bear reportedly continued to aggress upon her, biting and clawing at her while she struggled on the ground. Fortunately, the victim managed to reach her home where she called for help.

Emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene, and the woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials described her injuries as serious but non-life-threatening. At this time, her identity has not been disclosed to the public.
WDFW reported that two black bears had been sighted in the vicinity, potentially indicating that one of them was an adult female accompanied by her cub. In response to the attack, wildlife authorities attempted to apprehend the bear using tracking dogs; however, their efforts did not yield success. As a precaution, a trap has been set in the area, and WDFW police have initiated increased patrols to monitor the situation closely.
Lt. Erik Olson from the WDFW police emphasised that the attack was unprovoked, stating that the victim did nothing to instigate the bear’s aggression. He reiterated the department’s commitment to public safety, assuring residents that any wildlife that poses a threat to humans would be dealt with swiftly.
In light of the incident, the WDFW has offered guidance for individuals who may encounter a bear. They recommend identifying oneself by standing tall, waving arms overhead, and speaking calmly without making direct eye contact. Running from a bear is strongly discouraged, and the department advises carrying bear spray as a precautionary measure when in bear-populated areas.
The Sultan Police Department has echoed these safety recommendations, urging residents to remain indoors if they sight the bear or its cub. Community members are advised to refrain from approaching or attempting to provoke the animals, ensuring the safety of both themselves and the wildlife.
This disturbing event highlights the importance of coexistence between humans and wildlife, particularly in regions where encounters with bears may occur. As the investigation continues and authorities work to capture the bear, residents are reminded to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings in order to minimise risks when enjoying outdoor activities.
