Health officials in Washington, D.C. have issued a warning to the public about a potential measles exposure in the capital. The DC Department of Health released a statement confirming that an individual with measles had “visited multiple locations” in Washington, D.C. while contagious, urging those who may have been exposed to take precautions. The person at risk of exposure travelled on the Amtrak Northeast Regional 175 Train Southbound on March 19 from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. the next day, and was present at the Amtrak Concourse at Union Station between 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. Additionally, individuals who visited MedStar Urgent Care Adams Morgan on Saturday, March 22, between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. may also have been exposed to the virus.

Measles is a highly contagious airborne illness that spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, according to the DC Department of Health. Those infected can be contagious for several days before the characteristic rash appears on their body. The virus typically manifests in two stages, with symptoms such as a high fever, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a cough appearing 7 to 14 days after exposure. Subsequently, a rash develops on the face and spreads to the rest of the body about 3-5 days after symptoms onset. Individuals who have not been vaccinated against measles or who have compromised immune systems and believe they may have been exposed are advised to contact a healthcare provider or call 844-493-2652.

It is emphasised that those who have received two doses of the MMR vaccine are protected from the virus and do not need to take any further action. As of March 20, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported 378 confirmed cases of measles in the U.S. this year, with affected individuals in states including Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, and New York City, predominantly under 19 years old, though 23% of cases involved individuals aged 20 and older. In nearly all cases (about 95%), the infected individuals were found to be unvaccinated against measles. The CDC advises remaining vigilant for symptoms up to 21 days following exposure.
