In a poignant tale of friendship, Tiara Ramos has opened up about her battle with breast cancer alongside her late best friend, Anika Rashaun Walker Rehn. Their bond, which began in eighth grade, grew increasingly strong as they navigated the highs and lows of life together. Tragically, their journey took a heartbreaking turn when both women received breast cancer diagnoses just weeks apart in 2025.

Tiara, aged 35, reflects on their friendship, describing Anika, who passed away on 1 October at the age of 34, as her “sister”. Their initial animosity in school soon gave way to a close companionship, solidified by shared experiences, from heartfelt conversations to getting matching tattoos on their 18th birthdays. However, their friendship was also intertwined with tragedy; Tiara’s mother had succumbed to breast cancer when Tiara was just 16, with Anika providing unwavering support during that tumultuous time.
The impact of cancer on Tiara’s life was profound. “Anika was there for me throughout my mother’s illness and even on the day I lost her,” Tiara recalls, emphasising how Anika’s presence provided solace in her darkest moments. Fast forward nearly two decades, and both friends found themselves facing a shared cancer diagnosis that tested their resilience.
Anika first discovered her diagnosis in July 2025, having been plagued by debilitating back pain for months. Initially misdiagnosed, it was only after advocating for herself and securing an MRI that she learned her cancer had advanced to stage 4, affecting her spine. “One day she was active and celebrating her engagement, and suddenly she was in a wheelchair,” Tiara recounted, captured by the suddenness and severity of Anika’s situation.
Despite her own postpartum recovery after the birth of her second child, Tiara immediately rushed to be with Anika in the hospital. She took on the role of caregiver, providing comfort to her friend amidst the daunting realities of cancer treatment. “Anika’s fighting spirit never wavered,” Tiara remembers, highlighting Anika’s determination to face her diagnosis with courage.
However, just six weeks later, Tiara was dealt her own devastating news, revealing she had stage 1 breast cancer. Unlike Anika, Tiara had long suspected she was at risk due to her family history. “I had been aware of my susceptibility from a young age,” Tiara explained, sharing that she had been undergoing screenings for years and was prepared for the possibility that she would someday face the disease.
Despite her own struggles, Anika continued to support Tiara through her diagnosis, offering advice on navigating the complex world of cancer treatment. The two women often came to terms with the fact that, while they were journeying through breast cancer together, their paths were uniquely different.
Their shared experiences soon inspired the launch of a podcast called “Breast Friends Forever”, aimed at empowering other young women to advocate for their health. Through candid conversations, the two hoped to raise awareness surrounding breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
In a bittersweet twist, Anika married her partner Kyle on Valentine’s Day 2026, celebrating a significant milestone even as her health declined. Sadly, her battle with cancer ended just eight months later, leaving Tiara to grapple with the immense void left by her best friend’s passing.
The impact of Anika’s loss weighs heavily on Tiara, who expressed feelings of emptiness and the pain of never being able to share life’s experiences with her best friend again. “Anika was part of every core memory, and the silence is what hurts the most,” she admits, illustrating the depth of their connection.
In her mourning, Tiara also reflects on the questions surrounding early detection and the need for increased awareness. She points out that Anika had a family history of breast cancer, yet was not informed about her elevated risks or the necessity for regular screenings. “It makes me wonder if earlier interventions could have changed Anika’s outcome,” she said.
Now navigating her own treatment, which includes ongoing medication and hormone therapy, Tiara remains dedicated to advocating for awareness about breast cancer among women of all ages. “Breast cancer isn’t just an older woman’s disease,” she stresses. “Know your family history and advocate for yourself.”
Above all, Tiara aims to honour Anika’s legacy by encouraging women to trust their instincts regarding their health. “Anika was so much more than just a breast cancer patient – she was adventurous, loving, and full of life,” she concluded, hoping that sharing their story will inspire others to take charge of their health.
Through her grief, Tiara is determined to ensure that Anika continues to impact lives, leaving behind a vital message to young women everywhere about the importance of self-advocacy and awareness in the face of cancer.
