In an inspiring tale of youthful ambition, 17-year-old Sophia Fan from Urbana, Maryland, has turned her love for literature into a philanthropic endeavour. At just 13 years old, she founded Literacy Cycle, a nonprofit dedicated to collecting and donating books to underprivileged youth in both the United States and abroad. So far, the organisation has successfully distributed over 7,000 books, making a significant impact in the lives of many students who might otherwise lack access to essential reading materials.

Sophia recalls how her childhood obsession with reading, particularly a *My Little Pony* book, sparked her love for storytelling and the written word. This passion resurfaced when she stumbled upon a cupboard under her stairs filled with books from her past. “I really wanted to share that with students around the world,” she reflects. This moment was the catalyst that led to her creating the organisation, formerly known as AP Cycle.
The initiative began with a simple idea amongst friends at Urbana High School. Sophia and five fellow female students decided to donate their Advanced Placement (AP) textbooks after completing their exams. “Textbooks can be so expensive nowadays,” she points out, expressing her desire to contribute to those who cannot afford such resources. This act of generosity quickly blossomed into a larger mission, as Sophia realised that many students in need could greatly benefit from access to educational materials.
Since its inception, Literacy Cycle has partnered with various organisations across Maryland, including Books for International Goodwill, which sends books to countries like Gambia, Nigeria, and Uganda. Other collaborative efforts involve the Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership and the Asian American Center of Frederick, both of which aim to empower local communities. The success of Literacy Cycle has prompted its expansion to several states within the U.S. and even the launch of a chapter in Rwanda.
Sophia’s relentless efforts have earned her recognition, including a Daily Point of Light award from Points of Light, an organisation that encourages civic engagement and community service. She views this accolade as a powerful motivator not just for herself but for others considering starting their own initiatives. “They can just start with something small that they’re very passionate about. For me, that was literacy,” she says, underscoring the importance of actionable steps in community engagement.
Sophia credits her parents with being a crucial support system throughout her journey. “They help me drive back and forth and get the books for our different community events. I’m truly grateful that I had them through this process,” she states. This family support has been essential in helping her realise her vision and reach wider audiences.
Looking ahead, Sophia has ambitious plans for her future. Following her graduation from high school, she intends to study public or global health in college, with the aim of addressing health disparities on a global scale. This summer, she gained practical experience interning at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, which added to her understanding of the interconnectedness of health and education.
Despite her growing academic commitments, Sophia remains steadfast in her dedication to Literacy Cycle. “I hope other students can definitely take this and start their own community initiatives,” she expresses with enthusiasm. Her determination to continue the organisation represents a commitment not only to literacy but to inspiring future generations to realise their potential for community service.
Sophia Fan’s journey illustrates the transformative power of literature and the impact one young person can have on the world. Her initiative serves as a reminder that kindness and a passion for reading can create ripples of change, empowering young people across the globe.
