Billy Corgan, the frontman of rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, has recently spoken publicly about his long-standing friendship with Marilyn Manson amidst a backdrop of serious allegations against the musician. In a candid appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast on 22nd October, Corgan defended Manson, who has faced accusations of sexual assault and abuse from nearly a dozen women, although the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office chose not to file charges due to insufficient evidence and the allegations being outside the statute of limitations.

Corgan, who has known Manson—whose birth name is Brian Warner—for almost 30 years, expressed his personal belief in Manson’s innocence regarding the charges laid against him. “You have to stand by your friends,” he stated. However, he stressed that standing by a friend does not preclude the ability to be critical of their actions. During the discussion, he acknowledged that he had insights into certain details of the allegations that the public may not be aware of, leading him to form his own conclusions about Manson’s character.

The ongoing legal troubles for Manson began in earnest in 2021 when several women began coming forward with allegations, including high-profile figures such as actresses Evan Rachel Wood and Esmé Bianco. Corgan highlighted the fact that the thorough investigation conducted by the District Attorney’s Office, which spanned four years, ultimately resulted in no charges being brought against Manson, reinforcing his belief in his friend’s innocence.

“The decision not to file charges was commensurate with the person that I knew,” Corgan remarked. This assertion holds weight, especially considering the serious nature of the allegations surrounding Manson, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has sought legal recourse against some of his accusers.
Corgan’s sentiments on friendship extend to a broader philosophical view on rehabilitation and the public’s perception of individuals in difficult situations. He reflected on the idea that people are often prematurely judged without a complete understanding of the circumstances. “I don’t want the world to tell me who my friends are and who I should associate with,” he emphasised, highlighting the importance of personal relationships built over decades.
Nevertheless, Corgan admitted that he does not condone criminal behaviour and expressed a willingness to re-evaluate his relationships based on circumstances. He referred to a “case-by-case” approach and suggested that he believes in the potential for redemption, asserting that individuals should not be subjected to what he termed a “witch mob” mentality.
Marilyn Manson has faced numerous lawsuits, including those from Wood and Bianco. He settled with Bianco in early 2023; Bianco’s attorney noted at that time that the actress sought to “move on with her life and career.” Similarly, Manson also settled with another anonymous accuser shortly before a scheduled trial.
Notably, Manson had initiated a defamation lawsuit against Wood in 2022, which he later dropped in 2024 before reaching a settlement that allowed him to pay her attorney fees. His lawyer stated that Manson was relieved to put this chapter behind him after a lengthy and public legal battle.
The allegations against Manson have undeniably cast a long shadow over his career, yet Corgan’s perspective underscores a belief in the deeply personal nature of friendship and loyalty, even amid scandal. As the music industry and wider public discourse grapples with issues of accountability and justice, Corgan’s comments reflect the complexity of human relationships amid challenging circumstances.
In a world where public opinion can shift rapidly and social media can amplify the loudest voices, discussions surrounding friendship, loyalty, and accountability are more important than ever. As Corgan continues to support Manson, the broader societal implications of these ongoing legal proceedings and the culture surrounding them remain contentious topics.
