The Prince of Wales has unveiled a significant new initiative aimed at engaging young people in addressing climate change. As part of his ongoing commitment to environmental advocacy, Prince William has initiated the Children’s Earthshot, which is designed to encourage and empower children to devise innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

The announcement comes as Prince William prepares for his upcoming visit to Mumbai, India, where he will host the prestigious Earthshot Prize awards ceremony in November. The Children’s Earthshot initiative signifies an expansion of his decade-long mission to seek out practical remedies for the world’s ecological issues.
On October 22, 15 finalists were revealed for the inaugural I CAN Earthshot Challenge, recognising outstanding young changemakers aged 9 to 17 from across India. These finalists have been working diligently to address local environmental issues within their communities. This challenge is part of what organisers are calling “the most extensive youth outreach initiative in The Earthshot Prize’s history,” reaching nearly one million students from over 15,000 schools across 24 Indian states.
Successful teams will be awarded grants of $2,000 to further develop their projects and enhance their impact. The winning entries will be celebrated during the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on November 17, coinciding with a celebratory evening dedicated to recognising environmental excellence.
Commenting on the initiative, Jason Knauf, CEO of The Earthshot Prize, highlighted the creativity and determination of the young finalists, stating, “The extraordinary ingenuity shown by these young finalists demonstrates that the next generation is not waiting for the future to act; it is already building environmental solutions right now.” He further remarked that the initiative exemplifies the vital role of local community action, underpinned by youthful optimism, in the quest to restore our planet.
The young finalists from India have been developing solutions aimed at combating air pollution in educational settings, minimising food waste, and safeguarding local waterways. Prince William engaged his own children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—in discussions about this youth-oriented initiative, indicating a personal commitment to the programme.
The inspiration behind the Earthshot Prize is rooted in Prince William’s desire to make a meaningful difference in the fight against climate change. As articulated by Knauf, William’s focus is on creating a legacy he can proudly share with his children, driving home the notion that every aspect of the Earthshot project reflects his personal commitment to environmental stewardship.
Founded in 2020, the Earthshot Prize is influenced by President John F. Kennedy’s historic Moonshot initiative and aims to drive urgent action, foster innovation, and encourage global partnerships in environmental restoration and regeneration. Each year, five winners of the Earthshot Prize receive $1.4 million to help them further their environmental initiatives.
Mumbai will serve as the venue for the sixth iteration of the Earthshot Prize awards, following successful events in London, Boston, Singapore, Cape Town, and Rio de Janeiro—each attended by Prince William. This year, Indian filmmaker Karan Johar will host the awards night, having previously lauded William’s enthusiasm for climate action as “infectious.”
Johar commented on the significance of William’s efforts, stating, “Someone of his stature, someone of his power in the world, for him to take on a cause, relentlessly and effortlessly and with so much passion, really makes all the difference.” Such remarks underscore the importance of high-profile advocacy in driving public awareness and engagement with environmental issues.
As the world grapples with the multifaceted challenges of climate change, initiatives like the Children’s Earthshot signify a hopeful commitment to a sustained dialogue around environmental responsibility among younger generations. Through encouraging and equipping youth to tackle these issues head-on, Prince William aims to cultivate a future generation of informed and proactive environmental stewards.
