Lilly candidly revealed that she actually retired from acting in 2020, well before her public announcement in 2024. “I’d much prefer a quieter position,” she stated. Acknowledging her discomfort with fame, she added, “I’ve always hated being famous… being famous is the cost of the wealth that you can get as an actor.” This reflection provides insight into her motivations to step away from the fame and fortune often associated with a successful acting career.

Her departure from a high-profile career has not been without its challenges. Lilly noted the emotional struggle of walking away from success, particularly the affirmation that a successful career brings. “How do you walk away from that?” she questioned, acknowledging moments of doubt accompanied by fear. However, she ultimately affirmed that her decision was made with “great conviction.”
The actress had hinted at her intentions to leave acting long before her official retirement. In a resurfaced video from 2006, she shared her vision for the future, expressing a desire to focus on family while stepping back from the cinematic world. In her words, “I am terrified to admit this to the rest of the acting world, but ideally, 10 years from now, I’d like to be a retired actress, and I would like to have a family.”
Alongside her aspirations for personal happiness, Lilly’s educational background in political science and international relations reflects her broader ambitions. She previously contemplated a career as a missionary, humanitarian, or diplomat, underscoring her commitment to making a positive impact in the world. “I wanted to make the world a better place,” she stated. Her hands-on humanitarian work in Rwanda over the past two decades exemplifies this dedication.
Though she has stepped away from the screen, Lilly has not completely detached from storytelling. She lent her voice to the animated film “Legend of Destruction,” in which she portrays Queen Bernice. This historical film, which recounts the Jewish revolt against Rome and the destruction of the Second Temple in A.D. 70, is distinguished by its unique animation style, incorporating still paintings alongside performances.
The actress described her engagement with this project as deeply immersive, stating, “I didn’t understand what I was looking at … but I felt like I was just completely immersed in a way that most films don’t do for me anymore.” This passion for storytelling remains a significant component of her identity, as Lilly expressed a desire to share narratives that resonate with her own artistic vision.
Lilly’s reflections do not shy away from her faith, which provides her with a sense of purpose. “It’s a total trust and surrender that God has a plan for my life,” she explained, emphasising how her beliefs shape her outlook amid her life changes. While claiming to have left acting behind for the time being, she remains open to the possibility of returning to the industry in the future.
In light of her recent challenges, Lilly also disclosed a health issue resulting from a traumatic brain injury sustained in 2025. After fainting at the beach and suffering a fall, she revealed that brain scans indicated decreased function in various areas of her brain. Addressing her followers, she acknowledged her condition and her ongoing efforts to work with medical professionals to comprehend and confront the impacts of her injury.
As Evangeline Lilly navigates a different chapter in her life, her commitment to storytelling, humanitarian work, and personal well-being continues to define her journey. The disconnect from the fame of Hollywood appears to align with her long-held aspirations for a quieter, more meaningful existence.
