Airbnb has announced a significant change to its guidelines regarding the cleaning responsibilities expected of guests, set to take effect from 20th November. The updated policy aims to alleviate the burden on holidaymakers, particularly addressing those who have previously encountered extensive chore lists alongside hefty cleaning fees after checking out.

The new guidelines, unveiled on 20th October, mandate that hosts can only require guests to complete minor tasks and restricts requests that require considerable effort or resemble the duties of professional cleaners. This means guests will no longer need to contend with requests to undertake demanding chores like stripping beds, taking rubbish to external locations, or washing and putting away dishes. The platform has categorised certain cleaning tasks as “reasonable requests” that may be permitted, equipping guests with clearer expectations.

In a statement, an Airbnb spokesperson acknowledged the challenges faced by guests under previous house rules, which often seemed complex and burdensome. “House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we’ve heard from our community that they can be confusing, onerous, and hard to manage,” they explained. The revised policy aims to simplify these rules, making them more discoverable and easier for hosts to implement.
Under the new framework, while hosts are prohibited from imposing extensive cleaning duties, there remain some acceptable requests. Guests may still be asked to gather used dishes in the sink and collect bath towels, while rubbish should remain on the premises yet can be required to be separated into specified recycling and waste bins provided indoors. However, guests will not be instructed to forgo using any listed amenities, such as air conditioning, but may be asked to switch off appliances when they vacate.
Certain caveats may apply, allowing hosts to request additional measures in exceptional circumstances. For instance, if situated in a location prone to wildlife, hosts might ask guests to secure rubbish in a bear-proof container. In areas affected by drought, requests could include limiting shower durations. However, it is crucial that all house rules are clearly listed at the time of booking and that no new demands can be added afterwards.
To support these changes, Airbnb has implemented monitoring mechanisms. The company will flag any host requests that do not adhere to the newly established policy, followed by an email suggesting tips for resolution. Hosts may also be given the chance to appeal flagged issues, ensuring that reasonable standards are maintained across the board.
Airbnb has further clarified that imposing fines on guests is not permissible under the policy. Their existing AirCover programme already offers substantial protection for hosts against property damage caused by guests during stays, mitigating any concerns arising from potential damages.
This policy shift arrives at a time when the market for short-term rentals continues to grow, and many guests are increasingly selective about the places they choose to stay. By easing the cleaning responsibilities placed on guests, Airbnb aims to foster a more welcoming atmosphere, encouraging travellers to enjoy their holidays without the apprehension of being saddled with unwanted tasks.
As hosts prepare to adapt to these new requirements, it remains to be seen how this will affect both the guest experience and the operational practices of accommodation providers. While the new rules seek to enhance transparency and fairness in holiday rentals, it is hoped that they also enhance guest satisfaction, allowing everyone to enjoy their time away without the worry of managing excessive cleaning tasks.
