In North Philadelphia, a mother is desperately appealing for the return of her son’s beloved dog, Cody, who was allegedly taken while left tied outside a corner store. Diane Newman has spoken openly to local media about the emotional toll this incident has had on her family, particularly on her son, Jamal, who relies heavily on the companionship of his canine friend.

According to Newman, the incident occurred on 18th October when her boyfriend visited a store located at the intersection of West Berks and Van Pelt streets with Cody, their Shih Tzu. As dogs were not permitted inside, he tied Cody to a pole near the entrance. Upon returning to retrieve the dog, he discovered that Cody was missing. Surveillance footage, shared with NBC10, reportedly shows two individuals untying the dog and leading him away.

Cody holds a significant place in their household, especially in the life of Jamal, who is 47 years old and has cerebral palsy. Newman’s son is unable to walk and communicates primarily through those who know him well. After a serious accident when he was just six, Jamal spent time in a coma, making the bond he shares with Cody all the more precious. Diane expressed that the dog is not merely a pet but Jamal’s closest companion, stating, “He has nobody else.”
The connection between Jamal and Cody is profound. Newman rescued Cody from a shelter and gifted him to Jamal during Christmas as a surprise, after which the two formed a strong attachment. “He looked like he needed a home, and we looked like we needed him,” she recounted. The family nurtured Cody, and in return, he has provided emotional support that Jamal desperately needs.
Since Cody’s disappearance, the absence has been felt deeply within their household. Jamal persistently inquires if his dog has been found, with his mother revealing, “Every time I go outside and come back in, he asks, ‘Did you find my dog yet, Ma?’” This recurring question has added to the family’s distress as they struggle to cope with the situation.
Despite the heartbreak, Newman remains resolute in her quest to locate Cody. Her determination is unwavering, as she stated, “I refuse to give up…I’m going to die taking care of my son because he needs me.” Newman emphasised that her focus is on ensuring Jamal’s well-being. She conveyed an empathetic message to the individuals who took Cody, expressing understanding that mistakes happen and urging them to return the dog. “Can you please bring my son his dog back? That’s all he has,” she pleaded.
The bond between Jamal and Cody serves as a reminder of the unconditional love and companionship that pets provide, especially for those facing challenges and isolation. Newman underscored that while some may have options in life, Jamal lacks such choices, highlighting the critical role that Cody plays in her son’s daily existence.
As the search continues, Diane Newman is committed to leaving no stone unturned in her efforts. She has reached out through social media and local news outlets, hoping to raise awareness and encourage anyone with information to come forward. The emotional appeal from a mother striving to reunite her son with his best friend resonates profoundly, as the days pass without any sign of Cody.
