In an inspiring tale of determination and resilience, Courtney and her husband Scott have embarked on an extraordinary journey to build their own home in eastern Kentucky without relying on loans. Three years into this ambitious project, the family of seven is now residing in a house that has been constructed largely with Scott’s own hands, financed entirely from their earnings, a dream they once thought out of reach.

Courtney, reflected on their situation, acknowledging that before this endeavour, the couple had never owned property and had faced repeated rejections in their attempts to secure financing for a manufactured home. Their aspirations turned into reality after they purchased roughly 14 acres of land in 2020 for £10,000. The couple secured the deal after Scott discovered the owner planned to sell when assisting with timber clearing. Surprisingly, the owner kept his promise to sell to them, even after receiving other offers, which brought tears of joy to Courtney when they finally acquired the land.

The trajectory of their journey took shape in March 2023 when they began construction. Scott, armed with prior experience from assisting his uncles in building homes, took on the task with a blend of practical skill and modern technology. Relying on internet resources, including Google and YouTube tutorials, he has managed to handle about 97% of the construction process himself, ranging from laying the foundation to framing the walls. They did, however, enlist professionals for the roofing and septic system—tasks that required specialised expertise.
Despite the challenges, including unforeseen expenses such as a costly concrete delivery that exceeded their budget, Courtney and Scott persevered. Their financial circumstances dictated the pace of their progress. Often, their paychecks would be divided between construction materials and essential living expenses, leading to weeks where they couldn’t make advancements on the house. Courtney has amassed a wealth of knowledge through TikTok, where she shares updates and offers insight into their progress, resonating with many who face similar challenges in their pursuit of homeownership.
The couple has prioritised their family needs while striving for the completion of their home. Although Scott’s work in the coal mines is unpredictable, he dedicates much of his free time to building, all while Courtney juggles her role and also undertakes projects of her own. Faced with steep quotes for their interior staircase, she took matters into her own hands through extensive research and resourcefulness, successfully assembling the staircase with minimal assistance from Scott.
While the house is still a work in progress, Courtney and Scott made the decision to move in as early as April 2026, when they finally had access to running water, electricity, and a working bathroom. Though many rooms remain unfinished, the family has thoughtfully adapted their living space, setting up temporary cooking facilities and creating homely bedrooms for their five children, who range from 7 to 16 years old.
Throughout this journey, the couple has made sacrifices, from cutting back on vacations and dining out to prioritising working on their home over other activities. Yet, they take solace in the fact that they are inching towards a debt-free future. The idea of owning a home without a mortgage appears increasingly feasible, a stark contrast to their previous experiences of the stress and insecurity that came with renting.
As they anticipate the completion of their home—which Courtney estimates will cost between £100,000 and £110,000 in total—the couple reflects on the uncertainties that have marked their lives as tenants. The fear of not being able to provide stable housing for their children has been a powerful motivating factor throughout their project.
Despite the unfinished nature of their home, Courtney remains optimistic. She envisions a future where their children can enjoy the complete home that their father has built with diligence and care. Their journey serves as a testament to resilience and the belief that with hard work and dedication, dreams can indeed become reality—one paycheck at a time.
