Chewing gum is a common habit for many people around the world, but a recent study has shed light on a concerning issue – the ingestion of microplastics. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS), each stick of gum can release an average of 100 pieces of microplastic into saliva, with some sticks shedding up to 600 pieces. This revelation raises questions about the potential health implications of consuming microplastics on a regular basis. Sanjay Mohanty, the principal investigator of the project and an engineering professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), emphasised that while there are no human trials confirming the safety of microplastics, it is important to consider our exposure to plastics in everyday life.

The study conducted by Mohanty and graduate student Lisa Lowe compared the amount of plastics shed by natural and synthetic gum. Surprisingly, both types of gum were found to release similar amounts of microplastics when chewed. This led to the estimation that individuals who chew up to 180 sticks of gum a year could potentially consume a staggering 30,000 pieces of microplastic. The research highlighted that most of the microplastic is released into saliva within the first two minutes of chewing, as the grinding motion of teeth causes the plastic to break off.

The study, which will be presented at an upcoming ACS conference, involved subjects chewing gum for varying durations while their saliva was sampled at regular intervals. The research did not disclose the specific brands of gum used in the study, but it tested a total of ten brands, comprising five synthetic and five natural options that are commercially available. Mohanty stressed the importance of being mindful of the environment when disposing of gum, urging individuals not to litter or contribute to the growing issue of plastic pollution.
