The original debate team at Wiley College, then an institution for historically Black students, made headlines in the Jim Crow era. They notably defeated the University of Southern California, the reigning national champions, marking a significant step forward for racial equality in competitive debate. After coach Melvin B. Tolson’s departure in 1947, however, the programme fell into inactivity, leaving behind a legacy that was at risk of being forgotten.

In 2007, inspired by the story he portrayed in his film, Washington made a pivotal move to restore this vital aspect of Wiley’s heritage. He donated one million dollars to bring the debate team back to life, ensuring that its legacy would not only be remembered but also evolved to inspire future generations. In recent years, they claimed the Pi Kappa Delta national championship in both 2014 and 2016, and in the HBCU Nationals in 2025, they earned third place overall as well as second place in individual events. This resurgence can largely be attributed to the Washington family’s financial backing, which has significantly enhanced the team’s resources and opportunities.

Dr. Herman J. “I always thought I’d be playing football in college,” Bolden recounted. “But coming to Wiley and being part of the debate team felt like divine intervention.
