Kayem Foods Inc. has announced a significant recall of its ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, totalling approximately 1,584,361 pounds. This action was prompted by concerns that the products may have been improperly stored, potentially compromising food safety.

The recall, initiated on 17 October 2023 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), falls under a Class I designation. This classification represents the highest level of risk, indicating a “reasonable probability” that consumption of the affected items could result in serious health consequences or even death, as outlined by the FDA.

According to Kayem Foods, the potential issue arose from “temperature abuse during storage.” The company’s president and CEO, Matt Monkiewicz, emphasised the firm’s commitment to food safety in a public statement. “Our business depends on providing consumers with safe food of the highest quality,” he stated, adding that the recall is being conducted voluntarily as a precautionary measure. Monkiewicz expressed regret over the situation, affirming that the management team takes full responsibility and has learned from the incident.
Products affected by the recall were produced between 31 March and 7 October 2023. They bear establishment numbers “EST. M/P 7839,” “EST. P 20935A,” and “EST. M 9520” within the USDA inspection mark. The items include various products such as sausages made with pork and chicken, bacon, brisket, and hot dogs.
The FSIS has noted that the recalled products were distributed to retail and foodservice establishments across the United States and as far as Hong Kong. The discovery of potential temperature deviations occurred after the company received complaints from customers regarding “warm product temperatures at point of delivery” on 1 October 2023.
Though no illnesses have been reported in connection with these products, there are ongoing concerns regarding their presence in consumers’ homes. The FSIS is encouraging anyone who may have purchased the affected items to either return them to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of them safely. A complete list of the recalled products, including their UPC codes, is available on the USDA website.
In response to this situation, Kayem Foods is actively reaching out to its wholesale and retail partners with instructions for identifying and disposing of the recalled items to prevent any further risk to consumers. The company reassured its customers that it has addressed the issues leading to the recall and has put measures in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The recurrence of food safety recalls highlights the crucial role of consumer vigilance and timely action in ensuring public health. As the investigation unfolds, Kayem Foods and regulatory agencies will continue to monitor the situation closely to safeguard consumer health and confidence in food safety practices.
