On 17 October 2026, the 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade took place in New York City’s vibrant East Village, drawing celebrity guests and dog lovers alike. Among the attendees were renowned couple John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, who played a central role in the event, lending their support through their pet food brand, Kismet, which served as a sponsor.

The parade is a celebrated fixture in the city’s canine community, organised by the non-profit New York Dog Parade. This initiative was founded in 2025 by Fern Watt, an author and dog columnist, who stepped in to ensure the continued success of the Halloween Dog Parade when it faced the threat of discontinuation. With Teigen and Legend at the helm, the event unfolded as a delightful tribute to pets and their owners.
Although the couple now resides in California with their four children and four dogs, the East Village holds a special place in their hearts. Teigen recounted her fond memories of the area, explaining how Tompkins Square Park was the first location where they brought their late English bulldog, Puddy. The pet, whom she affectionately referred to as her “soul dog,” has had a profound influence on their lives and their venture into the pet food industry.
“We lived in the East Village, and I remember the wonder of walking our first dog, Puddy, to Tompkins Square Park,” Teigen shared in an interview. Her words echoed the sentiment shared by many pet owners who cherish similar experiences in the locality.
Legend added that Puddy was the motivation behind the creation of Kismet. “He was our first dog together in 2008, and we envisioned a brand that embodies love and community,” he explained. Their aim at the parade, and indeed their broader mission, is to foster connections among dog lovers and make events around pets a communal experience filled with joy.
As the parade commenced, there was a palpable excitement in the air. Teigen and Legend expressed their anticipation for this year’s costumes, humorously mentioning that they hoped to see at least “40 to 50” dogs dressed as Molly, the mechanical bird at the centre of a recent media feud involving Kelly Clarkson and Brooklyn’s Art of Play store.
Adding to the atmosphere, the couple donned their own eye-catching costumes. Legend chose to impersonate Daejon Love, a figure known for impersonating a San Francisco 49ers player and allegedly defrauding women. Teigen complemented his outfit as Love’s faux coach, showcasing their commitment to bringing fun and laughter to the proceedings.
The costume contest, a highlight of the event, featured impressive displays from various spirited pups. Judge Kwame Stewart, Kismet’s chief veterinary officer, shared his enthusiasm after travelling across the country for the occasion, stating, “I crossed the coast just for this. It’s every bit worth it.” Stewart, a veterinarian dedicated to community service through the Street Vet Project, brought his expertise to the judging panel.
While numerous dogs showcased their creativity and spirit through remarkable costumes, the coveted Best in Canine Costume title ultimately went to Snickers, a charming black-and-white dog. Snickers astounded the crowd with his outfit inspired by basketball player Jalen Brunson, earning the title and a sizeable prize. The winning pup received a large ribbon signed by Legend and Teigen, alongside a year’s supply of Kismet dog food and treats.
The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade continues to thrive as a cherished event in New York City, drawing together dog enthusiasts, creative minds, and celebrities. With the participation of figures like John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, the parade not only celebrates the bond between pets and their owners but also reinforces the sense of community that defines this beloved tradition.
