A 79-year-old woman from Australia is currently fighting for her life following a serious accident during her holiday in Bali, Indonesia. Estelle Ravenscroft, who was on her annual trip with her husband Keith, sustained critical injuries when she fell down an open stairwell at a restaurant on the weekend of October 10.

The horrifying incident occurred while the couple were enjoying lunch. According to Keith Ravenscroft, the moment was shocking. “Next thing I heard was this big scream,” he recounted. He described how Estelle slipped on the bathroom floor and tumbled down the stairwell, landing at the bottom in a state of distress.
In an update shared on a GoFundMe page set up to assist with the medical costs, their daughter Leonie Walsh revealed that Estelle has osteoporosis, which likely exacerbated the injuries she sustained in the fall. She suffered a total of six fractures—three on each leg—as a result of the accident.
Following the fall, Estelle was rushed to a local hospital, but her condition deteriorated quickly. Leonie described a harrowing moment for the family when Estelle was administered an opioid painkiller that caused an adverse reaction, leading to a significant drop in her vitals and convulsions. “This was so severe that we were close to losing her,” she wrote.
Estelle underwent an extensive nine-hour surgical procedure without pain relief due to the complications from the medication. Following the surgery, she was treated with two blood transfusions to address severe blood loss. Compounding the situation was the alarming fact that the couple did not have travel insurance for their holiday, a fact that has added immense financial stress to their plight.
Marilyn Jones, Estelle’s sister, noted the unusual nature of the situation. “They’ve been to Bali many times, and they’ve always had insurance,” she explained. Unfortunately, as they have aged, obtaining suitable travel insurance has become increasingly challenging.
As of October 19, the GoFundMe campaign has managed to raise over $19,000 from concerned supporters. This financial support aims to help cover the substantial medical expenses incurred during Estelle’s treatment.
Despite her critical state, there have been signs of improvement. Estelle remained in intensive care for several days, during which she experienced significant swelling in her mouth and throat. However, by October 18, her situation began to stabilise. Leonie announced that her mother was now breathing independently and was awake and aware.
As of the latest updates from the medical team, further MRI scans have shown positive outcomes from the extensive surgery Estelle underwent. “This is great news!” Leonie shared, expressing relief for the progress made after such a traumatic experience.
The Ravenscroft family’s story has garnered attention, highlighting both the unpredictable nature of travel and the vital importance of proper planning when it comes to health and insurance while abroad. As Estelle continues on her road to recovery, her family’s hope remains strong for her full return to health.
