The Bupp family, embarking on a remarkable journey, is currently navigating the waters of America’s Great Loop, a daunting 6,000-mile boating circuit encompassing the eastern coastline of the United States, various Great Lakes, and sections leading into the Gulf of Mexico. Parents Joanna (45) and Kevin Bupp (47), along with their sons Jackson (12) and Julian (10), made the bold decision to exchange their traditional land-based life for a year spent sailing, despite the accompanying logistical challenges.

With the family’s departure marking a significant change in their everyday routine, the Bupps faced a myriad of preparations before setting out to sea. The first hurdle was to ensure everyone was on board with the plan. Kevin recounted how he eased the process by highlighting the prospects of homeschooling their children instead of attending in-person classes. This pivotal moment helped galvanise their decision to leave their familiar surroundings behind.
Another important factor for the family was selecting the right boat that would accommodate their collective needs. Not only did it have to offer sufficient space for daily living, but it also had to enable Jackson and Julian to continue their education and allow Joanna and Kevin to fulfil their remote work commitments effectively.
As with any ambitious venture, unforeseen hiccups delayed their departure. Kevin shared, “We thought we were going to leave on a specific day, but one problem led to another.” He noted how they soon realised there would always be potential issues that could postpone their plans. Ultimately, they decided to take the plunge regardless of the lingering obstacles, boldly stating, “Let’s just go.”
After finally casting off, the family has found their journey surprisingly manageable and enriching. They have visited notable locations such as Washington, D.C., enjoyed sunsets on a tranquil island in Georgia, and successfully crossed the expansive Lake Ontario en route to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. “Everything ahead of us felt uncertain,” Kevin remarked. “None of us had ever embarked on anything of this magnitude before.”
Prior to their trip, Joanna sought advice from families who had undertaken similar voyages. “I reached out to a few families currently making the trip to learn what to bring and what essentials I needed,” she explained. One of the most valuable pieces of advice she received was succinct: “You just got to go.” This guidance encouraged Joanna to let go of her anxieties, recognising that the necessities for one family at sea could substantially differ from another’s.
Modern technology has played a crucial role in facilitating their life aboard. “Amazon ships to nearly everywhere, and with services like Instacart delivering groceries, we manage to stay well-stocked,” Joanna noted. Running errands and accessing necessities has become simpler while travelling. For instance, when they wished to visit D.C., an hour-long Uber journey provided an efficient means to explore the area.
This journey has not only provided the Bupp family with adventures across expansive waterways but also transformed their perspective on family life. “We’ve learned to embrace uncertainty, trust in each other, and adapt to our surroundings,” Joanna reflected, illuminating the valuable lessons born from their nautical experience.
As they navigate the unpredictable waters ahead, the Bupp family remains focused on maximising their time together and making the most of the unique experiences that life on the water brings. With their journey still ongoing, they continue to inspire thousands through their engaging updates shared on Instagram and YouTube, showcasing both the trials and triumphs of sailing around America’s Great Loop.
For the Bupps, this year at sea is not simply about exploring new horizons but also about deepening their family bond, discovering resilience, and appreciating the simplicity of life in motion. With many more miles still to cover, the adventure is just beginning for the sailing family from America.
