During a recent panel at New York Comic Con, Grant Gustin opened up about his initial reluctance to audition for the role of Barry Allen in the hit TV series *The Flash*. The actor, best known for his portrayal of the eponymous superhero, reflected on his journey from uncertainty to star of a show that ran for nine successful seasons from 2014 until 2023.

Gustin, now 36, shared that he felt ill-equipped for the role when he first received the audition. Speaking to fellow cast member Danielle Panabaker, who played Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, he admitted that he was hesitant and insecure about his suitability for the character. “I got an audition for it, and I did not want to go,” he recalled. “I was very, um, insecure about being wrong for it.”
At the time of his audition, Gustin was just 23 years old and felt he had a youthful appearance, which he believed did not align with the character description. “I probably looked about 19 and was 30 pounds lighter than I am now… a very thin guy,” he added, noting that the script depicted Barry as an older, “blond and buff” individual. Gustin expressed, “I don’t think on paper that I was right for the role, but somehow it worked out.”
Despite his initial doubts, Gustin continued with the audition process and experienced a shift in perspective. The pivotal moment came when he attended his callback with David Nutter, the show’s executive producer, known in the industry as the “pilot king.” Gustin recalled that Nutter was incredibly supportive during the audition, which significantly boosted his confidence.
“David Nutter called me after my callback and basically said, ‘I want you to get this. It’s not gonna be up to me. There are gonna be a lot of executives at Warner Brothers and CW that are gonna make this decision,’” Gustin explained. This encouragement made Gustin reconsider his self-doubt. “That was the moment that I felt emboldened,” he said. “Maybe I’m not as wrong for this as I thought. Maybe I can bring something to this that they weren’t expecting.”
His nuanced interpretation of Barry Allen proved more than satisfactory, winning him several accolades, including multiple Teen Choice Awards and a Saturn Award. He also received nominations for Best Hero at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, highlighting his successful portrayal of the beloved character.
Throughout its run, *The Flash* garnered a dedicated fanbase, becoming a staple of the superhero genre on television. The show’s legacy is celebrated, and its entire nine-season run is now available for streaming on Netflix, offering both old and new fans a chance to experience Gustin’s journey as the Scarlet Speedster.
In his recent reflections, Gustin’s honesty about his initial reservations serves as an inspiring reminder that perseverance can lead to unexpected triumphs. His story resonates not only with aspiring actors but also with anyone facing insecurities in pursuing their dreams.
As the *Arrowverse* continues to evolve, fans remain grateful for Gustin’s contributions to the franchise and to superhero television as a whole. His frank discussion during the convention added a personal touch to the series’ legacy, proving that even the most unlikely candidates can become icons in their own right.
