Duke University cornerback Kimari Robinson has come under fire for an incident involving a female athletic trainer during a football game on October 17. The controversy erupted after footage emerged showing Robinson swatting the trainer’s arm as she rushed to assist his injured teammate, DaShawn Stone.

The incident occurred in the third quarter of the match against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. As Stone lay on the field, Robinson was seen crouching beside him to assess his condition. During this moment, a female athletic trainer approached to provide medical assistance and accidentally bumped into Robinson, prompting his apparent annoyance and subsequent swat at the trainer’s arm.
The video, which quickly circulated on social media, captured the moment and drew widespread criticism of Robinson’s behaviour. Prominent figures, including former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, voiced their disapproval on social media platform X, condemning his actions. Griffin stated, “As a man, this just can’t happen. No excuses for it,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Others echoed Griffin’s sentiments. Former Arkansas football coach Kevin Kelley described the incident as unacceptable for a player, especially in a professional environment where respect and collaboration are paramount. He noted how the athletic trainer should not be subjected to such treatment while trying to perform her duties. Kelley urged Robinson to take responsibility for understanding the best practices on the field.
One user, identifying as a certified sports nutritionist, brought attention to the crucial role athletic trainers play as first responders in these scenarios. She pointed out their responsibilities include stabilising injuries and managing critical situations, asserting that they often receive little respect and remuneration for their essential work in the sporting environment.

Despite the backlash, some individuals have come to Robinson’s defence, suggesting that the intensity and high emotions of the game may have contributed to his reaction. They argued that split-second decisions in the heat of competition should be considered when evaluating his actions. One supporter commented on the platform X, stating, “Before we end a young man’s playing career, maybe we just say not cool and move on.”
Robinson, hailing from Miramar, Florida, is currently a junior at Duke University. His actions have raised questions about player conduct and respect within the sport, especially towards those responsible for the safety and welfare of athletes.
In terms of the game itself, despite the incident and Stone’s injury, the Blue Devils fell short against their rivals, losing the match 24–20. The defeat brought their season record to 4–2, marking a challenging moment for the team both on and off the field. Stone, fortunately, was able to walk off the field after the injury, reflecting well on the prompt response from the athletic staff.
As the university has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident, the conversation around player behaviour and respect for medical professionals within sports continues to develop. Athletics is an arena where emotions run high, but it also raises the importance of treating all individuals with dignity, particularly those who play a crucial role in athlete safety.
