Terry Bradshaw, the renowned sports broadcaster and NFL Hall of Famer, has bravely navigated a challenging health journey over the past two years. In November 2021, the 78-year-old athlete was diagnosed with early-stage bladder cancer, a revelation that came after he experienced troubling symptoms, including an uptick in urination.

The urologist’s diagnosis prompted a range of emotions for both Bradshaw and his wife, Tammy. She recalls vividly the moment they learned the results of a biopsy. “He called me two days later and said, ‘Okay, it’s positive. It is bladder cancer, but we’ve caught it very, very early. We can do the treatment. Everything should be fine,’” she shared. This reassuring news provided some comfort to the couple following the shocking diagnosis.

Tammy, who has a background as a radiology manager, brought a unique perspective to her husband’s situation. Drawing upon her professional experiences with cancer prognoses and treatments, she approached Terry’s situation from a clinical angle, allowing her to maintain a level-headed mindset. “I had to separate myself a little bit,” she explained during their recent conversation at their ranch in Saint Jo, Texas.
Bradshaw underwent Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy treatment for the bladder cancer, which proved successful. However, the couple faced further trials when Terry began to experience neck pain four months later, leading to the discovery of a 2.5-centimetre tumour on his parotid gland. This was diagnosed as Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that significantly raised their anxiety levels.
With the difficult news initially delivered by Tammy, Bradshaw faced another battle. “I was really scared on that one. It was really hard,” she admitted. In her effort to be forthright, she presented the facts, including the rarity and treatment statistics of the cancer, while emphasising that it was indeed treatable. “It is statistically possible to cure it, but we’re going to have to really fight hard on this one,” she recounted.
Following surgery, Terry embarked on a regimented course of radiation, an endeavour described by Tammy as particularly arduous. Fortunately, after the treatment, doctors confirmed that Terry was “cancer-free.” Nevertheless, the reality of living with a history of cancer continues to weigh heavily on both of them. “It’s hard to trust it, isn’t it?” Tammy questioned, echoing the concerns shared by many who have faced similar health crises.
Regular scans are a part of Terry’s new normal, as they work to ensure he remains cancer-free. However, both he and Tammy admit to feeling a constant sense of nervousness leading up to these appointments. “I’m not going to lie to you,” Terry candidly expressed, “I’m waiting on it to return.” He further elaborated that he finds himself feeling more anxious now than when he first received his initial diagnosis.
Initially, the couple intended to keep the details of his health struggles private, but a concerning incident during a live Fox NFL Sunday broadcast in September 2022 led Terry to reconsider this choice. While demonstrating a football drill on air, he was struck by a sudden inability to breathe and had to seek help from co-host Howie Long. This alarming experience prompted him to eventually share his health story with the public in October.
Terry clarified that he did not seek sympathy through this revelation, but rather hoped for prayers and support from his fans and the wider community. “If anything, I want your prayers,” he stated with sincerity, reflecting on the immense emotional toll that his health battles have taken on him and his family. Despite the hardships, the couple feel fortunate to have navigated this tumultuous journey together.
In addition to discussing his health challenges, Terry Bradshaw recently revealed insights from his new memoir, *Looking for Terry*. The book delves not only into the peaks and valleys of his football career but also addresses his long struggle with clinical depression and the unwavering love he shares with Tammy.
Available for purchase from HarperCollins, the memoir aims to provide readers with an honest reflection on the joys and challenges of his life, offering a glimpse into the world of a sports icon grappling with personal trials while maintaining hope for the future.
