English actress Gabriella Wilde, renowned for her performances in films such as *Wonder Woman 1984* and series like *Doctor Who*, has recently shared her journey into becoming a death doula. At 37 years old, Wilde has committed herself to assisting individuals and families in navigating the complexities of end-of-life care.

In a recent appearance on the British daytime series *This Morning*, Wilde spoke candidly about her experiences and motivations behind this profound career shift. “I started training [at night] while I was still on *Poldark*,” she recounted, referencing the popular BBC historical drama she starred in from 2016 to 2019. Her foray into this field began alongside her studies in psychotherapy, which piqued her interest in grief and mortality. “I became acutely aware of how little we discuss these topics,” she noted.
Wilde explained that her training and experiences have not only reshaped her understanding of death and grief but have also influenced her appreciation for life itself. “It altered my relationship with my own life and how I live it,” she said. The actress is a firm believer in the power of open conversations about death, suggesting that such discussions can alleviate feelings of isolation for families facing grief.
Initially, stepping into the role of a death doula provoked feelings of “imposter syndrome” for Wilde. However, she soon realised that a significant aspect of her role is more about presence than expertise. “It’s really just about being there and showing up,” she explained. Providing calm support for those in transition can be as simple as holding a person’s hand, ensuring they do not feel alone in their final moments.
Wilde’s personal experiences with loss have deeply informed her path. The unexpected death of her elder sister from an inoperable brain tumour profoundly impacted her life, compelling her to confront the poignant question, “Where is she now?” This experience, coupled with a serious health scare where she was initially misdiagnosed with cancer, instilled a newfound clarity regarding what truly matters in life.
Reflecting on her health scare, she emphasised the clarity that emerged from such a traumatic event. “I began to contemplate what is significant and what is not, which was quite precious,” she shared. This new perspective has not only transformed how Wilde views death but has also reshaped her relationship with the entertainment industry.
Reassessing her priorities, Wilde explained, “Acting felt like life or death at one point, but now I understand that it is not”. This shift has led her to a more detached approach towards the industry, allowing her to enjoy her career without becoming consumed by it. “It’s take it or leave it,” she remarked, showcasing a healthier attitude towards her work in film and television.
In addition to her new role, Wilde has collaborated on a podcast titled *MORTAL*, which delves into the often-avoided subjects of grief and loss. In an announcement on Instagram, she described the podcast as an opportunity for intimate discussions with a variety of experts, including artists, therapists, and morticians. “MORTAL asks how facing our mortality might enrich our lives,” she explained, encouraging listeners to engage with these vital conversations.
Wilde isn’t alone in her exploration of end-of-life care. Fellow actress Nicole Kidman revealed her own interest in becoming a death doula during a recent event. “It’s about helping people in the final stages of life and supporting their families,” Kidman shared, noting that her inspiration stemmed from losing her mother.
As society continues to grapple with the often-taboo subjects surrounding death, Wilde’s commitment to fostering these discussions through her work as a death doula and her podcast is significant. Her aim to normalise conversations about mortality may well contribute to a collective shift in how we approach the end of life for ourselves and our loved ones. Through her compassionate presence and genuine efforts, Gabriella Wilde is making a meaningful impact on her community and beyond.
