A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a young man nearly a decade after the discovery of his remains in West Virginia. Richard William Nichols, aged 65, was apprehended on 2 September 2023 in Indiana and has been charged with first-degree murder concerning the death of Ivan “Vanya” Perlis, who was just 25 years old at the time of his death.

The case dates back to November 12, 2016, when Perlis’s remains were found by a hunter in the Dolly Sods area near Maysville, West Virginia. The investigation revealed the identity of the victim when authorities discovered his skull, which bore three gunshot wounds to the back of the head. Five bullet fragments extracted from the skull were determined to have originated from three .22-caliber bullets, as reported by various news outlets, including WBOY and WV MetroNews. A forensic examination by the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office established that Perlis had died between October 3 and October 5, 2016.

Nichols quickly became a person of interest following a series of events that unfolded prior to Perlis’s disappearance. The two men had previously been residing together on a property in Tucker County, with Perlis living in a garage and Nichols staying in a camper. According to police reports, an altercation erupted in September 2016 when Nichols accused Perlis of stealing a bandana that had belonged to a deceased friend. Eyewitnesses claim that during the confrontation, Nichols was aggressive, reportedly picking up Perlis by the neck and shaking him.
In a January 2017 interview with investigators, Nichols acknowledged the confrontation but insisted that he and Perlis had resolved their differences afterward. However, as the investigation progressed, his statements regarding Perlis’s whereabouts began to shift. In a subsequent interview in May 2017, Nichols claimed to have driven Perlis to meet an unknown man in a brown Volvo in the Dolly Sods area. He initially suggested that Perlis had entered the man’s vehicle and later observed him walking along the road.
As the inquiry continued, Nichols’s narrative altered once more. He claimed the unidentified man threatened both him and Perlis with a firearm, warning Nichols to leave the area or face dire consequences. This man, referred to as “Snowman,” became a focal point in Nichols’s account of events. It was during follow-up interviews with key witness Lester Mook that a more disturbing picture emerged. Mook stated he had seen Nichols and Perlis leave the property together in Nichols’s truck on the day the victim went missing.
Approximately four hours after leaving, Nichols returned alone and allegedly informed Mook that Perlis would not be coming back. Disturbingly, Mook noted that Nichols had changed clothes when he returned, reportedly stating that he had to because his previous garments had been stained with blood. This significant detail raised further alarms for investigators.
In December 2024, Mook disclosed to police during another interview that Nichols had directly confessed to him about the murder. When asked about Perlis’s absence, Nichols allegedly stated that he had put “three bullets in his head” and added that he burned his blood-soaked clothing in an attempt to cover up the crime. Mook later confessed that he had initially withheld this critical information out of fear of becoming embroiled in the ongoing investigation.
The combination of Mook’s testimony and Nichols’s conflicting statements ultimately provided law enforcement with enough evidence to warrant an arrest. Nichols is currently being held without bail at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in West Virginia.
This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that had gone cold for nearly ten years, leaving local residents and Perlis’s family searching for closure. Investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the tragic death of Ivan “Vanya” Perlis, as the legal proceedings against Nichols are set to unfold in the coming weeks.
