Anna Faris has opened up about her departure from the hit sitcom *Mom*, responding to remarks made by Chuck Lorre in his recent memoir. The actress portrayed the character Christy Plunkett for seven seasons but left prior to the show’s eighth and final season. In a social media post dated October 15, Faris described Lorre’s comments as surprising and hurtful, shedding light on her abrupt exit.

In *Sitcom*, Lorre, an acclaimed television writer and producer, discussed his initial hesitations about casting Faris before her eventual hiring. He reflected on his later concerns regarding her presence on the show, inferring that she left under “mysterious” circumstances. Faris took to Instagram, expressing her feelings about the situation. “Yikes. Yes, I read a few things. I really didn’t see that coming. Of course it hurts,” she admitted.

Despite the pain of his words, Faris acknowledged the opportunities Lorre extended to her. She remarked, “Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted. I’m proud of what we made together” and reiterated her gratitude for the experience. The multi-camera sitcom, which aired from 2013 until 2020, depicted the life of Christy, a newly sober single mother navigating recovery alongside her own mother, played by Allison Janney.
Handling her personal struggles, Faris reflected on her journey toward sobriety, stating, “I’ve been sober for a year and a half. I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it.” She went on to express that she is now feeling healthier and happier than she has in a long time. “If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful. It gets better. I’m proof,” she encouraged her followers.
Initially announcing her exit from *Mom* in September 2020, Faris cited her time on the show as some of the most fulfilling in her career. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family,” she said at the time.
However, Faris did not disclose the reasons behind her departure then. In a later interview with PEOPLE in November 2022, she revealed that she had been contemplating a break from acting and considering retirement. “I was like, ‘Do I have enough [money] to retire?’” she explained, hinting at a deep introspection regarding her career choices.
In another candid discussion with Chelsea Handler on the *Dear Chelsea* podcast, Faris expressed feelings of disillusionment and a lack of ambition. She articulated, “I was, in hindsight, I think pretty depressed, like, premenopausal depression without recognising it.” This admission brought to light her struggles with mental health, and how they led her to reevaluate her professional life.
Faris further noted a connection between her struggles and her past drinking habits. “There was a correlation between drinking and depression for me… I had to take a step back and not self-sabotage,” she stated, highlighting the importance of prioritising her mental well-being.
In an interview regarding his memoir, Lorre commented on his lack of communication with Faris, stating, “I’ve never spoken with her, no.” This absence of dialogue underscores the complicated dynamics that often arise within the entertainment industry, particularly around personal struggles and professional relationships.
As Faris continues to navigate her career, she recently starred in the latest *Scary Movie* film while also undertaking other projects like *Spa Weekend* and *Primetime*. With reflection and resilience, she has embraced her journey, demonstrating the power of recovery and personal growth in the face of adversity.
